I am the 2nd AND 4th owner of this 1972 Willow Green, 914-4, fuel injected 1.7 liter.
I bought this car from the original owner in Kansas in 1975 while I was in college in Wichita KS. In 1977 I needed a bigger car so I sold this one to a family friends mother in Winfield Kansas. She had it for 28 years. In 2005, she hadn"t driven the car in 5-6 years, was no longer able to drive a car, so my father and brother bought the car back from her and gave it to me as a surprise for my 50th birthday. It still had, (and still does have), my fraternity sticker I had put on the back window back in the 70"s. It also still has an oil change sticker on the drivers door from the place in Winfield Kansas where the lady would get the oil changed. I immediately took the car to a 914 mechanic here in Kansas City and told him to look it over, make it run good and make sure it is safe to drive. He did brakes, brake hoses, replaced some fuel lines, tie rod ends, shifter bushing, tune up etc. It has been fun to still take this car out once in a while for Sunday drives on nice days, but my interests have changed and it"s time to pass her on to her next keeper.
The engine is original fuel injected engine and always starts right up, is tight & solid and does not leak or burn any engine oil. I only use K&N Oil Filters and Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil in this car because the VR1 oil it has the added zinc that is good for these older engines. (No I do not race the car). To improve the air intake/air flow, I replaced the original factory Oil Bath air cleaner, with an aftermarket air intake system for 914 1.7 that uses a K&N Air Filter. I will include the original oil bath cleaner with the sale in case you want to go back to an all original engine look. I had also installed an aftermarket crankcase breather box and hose system that I attached up under the engine lid and I removed the rain tray to do that. I never drive this car in the rain. I will include the original rain tray with the sale. Those are the only two simple modifications to the engine I did and you can easily change it back to factory original if you so choose. The past several years I have replaced two fuel injectors, the motor mounts, right rear brake caliper and the master cylinder. The only thing that has stumped me for a while is, when engine is warmed up and hot, it will sometimes not want to idle so I have to kind of keep my foot on the gas a little bit at stop lights/signs. When I got the car out a few weeks ago to take my pictures to put on ebay, gas started leaking out of the fuel pump. I immediately ordered a rebuilt one from Auto Atlanta and put it on 4/8/2021 and drove the car for 45 minutes.
Original tail shifter transmission. The left axle seal or boot does leak a little oil and slings it up under the car and makes it appear like the engine is leaking oil but it"s not engine oil. My 914 mechanic moved out of town so I just put a piece of cardboard under the rear to catch the drips when parked in the garage. Checking the oil level is easy so I just top it off a couple times a year. Clutch is good and smooth. 2nd gear synchronizer is not too good but does shift ok from 1st to 2nd if you just hesitate a few seconds and let the rpm slow a little before gently sliding it into 2nd. 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to 4th, 4th to 5th all shift just fine. 5th to 4th, 4th to 3rd downshift fine. 3rd to 2nd and 2nd to 1st not so good. I usually just wait until stopped to shift back into 1st. Like many old cars, it has it"s own personality and you just have to learn how the car wants to be treated. Even with these couple of quirky things, it has still been enjoyable to drive this car around on nice days.
Brown interior seats have no rips or tears. Original carpet and original floor mats are obviously worn after 49 years. Interior courtesy light can manually be turned on and off. It doesn"t come on when doors are opened but I rarely drive the car at night. The fasten seatbelt light does not come on. Targa top is in good condition and latches in place just fine. Dash has couple of cracks but no chunks missing. Dash face still has the aftermarket wood dash kit that was on it when I bought the car back in the 70"s. Glove box door opens and closes fine. Ashtray slides in and out fine. All gauges and gauge lights work. Oil pressure and alternator lights work. Tach and Speedo work but the odometer has not worked since I got the car back. AM FM push button radio works and says PORSCHE on the AM/FM selector bar. Good speakers and speaker grills. Turn signals work. Horn works. Cigarette lighter works but I am a non smoker. Head lights, Running/fog lights, Brake lights, side markers, emergency flashers and Reverse lights all work. I replaced old GE sealed beam headlights with H4 headlights. Headlights go up and down just fine. Wipers work but car has not seen rain since I got it back in 2005. Washer fluid tank holds fluid but I have never used it. Sun visors good. Parking brake good. Seats adjust and tilt fine. Door openers, locks, handles and window cranks all work. No cracks or chips in windshield, windows or rear glass. Windows crank up and down. Could use the two rubber guides at top of the window channels so they don"t rattle when you close the doors. Rubber moulding along bottom between dash and windshield has dried and cracked.
Front and back chrome bumpers have some dents/dings in them but not rusted. Front and back rubber bumper toppers have a couple small chunks gone. Body rust at lower corners of the door jams. See pictures. As you probably already know, you can actually buy those preformed panels to fix that area if you want. No rust inside front trunk. A little rust in rear trunk but no too bad and not rusted thru. (Rear trunk lid stays down but doesn"t stay latched very good). Few rust bubbles by tail lights but they have been there a long time and have never caused the paint to come off. Floor pans are very good and have no rust. Battery shelf is solid and some rust below. See pictures. Couple other rust areas I noticed when car was up on the lift getting the fuel pump put on. See pictures. Everyone has different levels of condition acceptance. Every old original car is going to have some rust. Rather than try to describe it, I took many pictures of the car so you can be the judge. No the paint is not shiny anymore. The lady before me had it repainted at one time. It looks good in the pictures but it is faded. It does have some scratches, chips, spider webbing and cracking in places. Hard to see in pictures, but from a distance it is still a cool looking green Porsche. The front hood does have a small line down it where some paint came off as a result of the car sitting under another 914 on a lift at repair shop and the car above leaked some fluid onto my hood and ate a little of the paint off.
I put the Riviera looking wheels on that you see in the pictures. Tires have lots of tread on them. I also still have the 4 original factory wheels with the chrome caps. If you want them you can have them but you might have to pay your shipper extra to ship them with the car. Those rims have old but decent tires on them too. I do not have the car jack for the car. I do have have a custom fit dust cover for the car I will include with the sale. I have always kept the cover on the car car when in my garage. I do have a HAYNES 914 repair manual I will include with the sale if you want it.
I have been very honest with my description to the best of my knowledge about the car. Car is being sold as-is. I am not a mechanic or body repair person. I hate to part with this car but it"s just time in my life to let her go. If you can come see the car or want to send someone to look at it for you before you place a bid or if you have any questions, feel free to message me here thru ebay or call me. Steve 913-522-1149. (If you get my voice mail, leave a message and I will call you back).
