Vehicle description
This is a 1972 Ford LTD Brougham with a 400 cid M-motor and two barrel carburetor. It was bought at an estate auction, off the road since 1992, having been put up on blocks in a dry storage concrete floor barn. Mileage shown is 47580 and subject to change as the car is being driven. I have no supporting evidence that this is correct, but was told it is by the estate family. The condition of pedals, carpet and overall underbody supports this. Body is in straight condition with nothing out of alignment including door gaps, hood and bumpers/fenders. Appears to be no bondo anywhere. There is surface rust in the paint on the hood. Top is presentable but has minor cuts as shown. Glass is perfect. Rear windows will not operate. I fixed one motor but could not get the lift back in place so it is in the trunk ready for a more patient mechanic than me. The power motor itself is a simple fix. Front windows work fine. Tires are old but show good tread and little to no cracking. There is no frame/rocker/floorpan rust other than surface. Exhaust is excellent and quiet. Interior is complete and clean with great carpet (some staining on passenger footwell), headliner, parcel shelf, seatbelts, dash and trim. There is no fading even on the seatbacks. The power front seats are highback semi-buckets in Brougham trim blue nylon and have two splits as shown. Every light, button, switch and feature work perfectly. AC powers on and blows, compressor engages and hose lines get cold, but the cabin air just cools slightly. All vacuum vents switch perfectly from defrost to dash to floor. The original AMFM radio is in place and works perfectly. Even the clock ticks intermittently. Note that there is no post between the front and back windows. Pillarless coupe design! This LTD is VERY nice on the road, with great torque off the line and smooth power from the 400 cid motor. No hesitation or bogs. Transmission shifts perfectly up and down. It is everything it should be, driving very fast, quiet, straight and smooth. The way this car goes down the road is the best part about it. Nothing compares among today’s vehicles. It does not sag with a full load of friends and corners pretty well too. Braking is quiet and firm. Car runs cool even in 100 degree temps and crawling traffic. Work done to bring this car to the road again includes carb rebuild, new fluids throughout, draining and flushing tank (it was very clean), new battery/alternator/coil, plugs cleaned and added non-ethanol fuel. Master cylinder replaced and all brake lines bled. I painted the aircleaner and added the correct decal. I’ve driven it 200 miles or so. It does need paint and seats restitched, but if I did that I would end up keeping it. These big Fords are catching a good value increase. This car could be a great daily as is, or a fine candidate for more restoration.
