Vehicle description
This 1970 Plymouth Superbird was purchased from the original owner in June 2016 and has just 43,650 miles. The car had been sitting in a garage since 1990 and retains its matching-numbers 440ci Super Commando engine, 727 Torqueflight automatic transmission, and 3:55 sure grip rear-end.
This car was purchased from Webster Chrysler Plymouth near Rochester, NY in 1971. At some point, the front of the vehicle was struck and the owner had a fiberglass nose cone fitted. The original head light buckets and mechanicals were integrated into the fiberglass replacement. He kept the original steel nose cone in his backyard and it was recovered. It is included with the sale and a local body shop concluded that it was repairable.
The previous owner notes that the car received one repaint sometime in the 1980s. Matching serial numbers are present under the trunk molding and core support. The floors, fenders and roof are said to be original and rust-free.
Inside, the car remains stock with its original dashboard, seats, and steering wheel in place. The gauges, radio, wipers, and head lights are operate. The odometer shows 43,650 miles which the original owner stated are correct. The rear seats appear to be in fairly good condition for their age.
The car had the gas tank drained and cleaned, fuel lines blown out, cylinders oiled, engine oil changed, and an additional fuel filter fitted along with an Edelbrock carburetor. The engine reportedly fired right up and was allowed to get up to temperature to check the cooling system. It then received another oil change to remove any contaminants and is now said to run and drive.
A proper tune-up and comprehensive inspection of all critical systems should be performed before the car is driven further. The original carburetor is included with the sale.
This Superbird is a good candidate for restoration or could simply be gone through and enjoyed as-is. It is now running and driving, but will need further work to make it reliable.
