Vehicle description

1970 Cyclone 429/360 HP, 4 spd. Big Spline HD. Close Ratio Toploader, 9" Rear w/3.50 Trac Loc, Nodular Center Section, 31 spline axles. Staggered Rear Shocks with Competition Suspension and Tach Dash Cluster. Exact same drive train as the Cyclone"s cousin the 70 Torino Cobra. Fords Top Shelf Heavy Duty Factory Stuff for Sure. Car is believed to be a LM Sales and Marketing Executive or Promotional Car equipped with the rare and most expensive Cyclone option, a power sunroof. Sunroof cars required a vinyl roof and this car did have a vinyl roof in the past as was noted by the paint shop. It had been removed 25-30 yrs ago. This car was ordered by the LM Sales and Marketing Office in Pico Rivera California on 10/16/1969. Most likely used for Promotional Use in CA. This car would be sold thru LM Dealer Bill Hopkins n Torrance CA approx 5 months later. Approximately 16 Sunroof cars were made including 5 Spoilers. Majority were 351 GTs. This is believed to possibly the only Cyclone. Today only 5 are known to exist with 2 being 351s. Sunroof Option is not on Marti Report but 2nd page does show a special Memo Notation and since it was ordered thru L&M Sales and Marketing it is believed they requested the option. The Pico Rivera office was known by Mercury Enthusiasts for ordering Wild Colors, Combinations and Options to Showcase Specific Models. Car has been in the hands of some noted Cyclone experts and this is the information I have gathered from them.
Car has been undergoing stages of restoration for past several years. Dr. Z"s Rod Shop in Michigan pulled the front clip and detailed it properly. The engine was freshened up at this time. The 429 has been upgraded with Rare 429 CJ Exhaust Manifolds, Spec Cam, Valve Covers, Edelbrock Alum Intake, 780 Holley Avenger Series Carb that works perfectly. The car cranks easily and is a pleasure. This car is strong. I have owned 3 low mile 428CJ Torinos, 4spd and auto and it runs better than any of them. The engine, trans and rear are awesome. No funny noises. 4 spd trans is super slick and the rear is quiet with no whines. Factory Hurst Shiftier is awesome. Engine is believed to be original with 4 of the last 5 serial numbers matching. Last digit is a 5 instead of a 0. I was told that this was not unusual for early 429s but I am not a Ford engine expert or historian. The entire suspension was replaced including, leaf springs, coil springs, ball joints, bushings, shocks, brake hardware, brake lines, hubs, lines, gas tank, fuel line etc while at Dr. Z"s. New, Waldron $1200 Factory Exhaust with H-Pipe and California mandated turn downs which have clamps so you can slip off and install chrome tips.
Super Nice repaint in its original color of Competition Yellow w/Spoiler Stripes. Car showed no evidence of accident history and overall was extremely solid. No rust at around the front and rear window channels. Wheel wheel moldings are basically like new. No dings, dents scratches on them and that"s a $1600 value. NOS door handles. New front spoiler. Very Nice Grill and Trim. Most trim looks original but is not dull, dinged or dented. Hood is super nice and has the ram air plate. Factory rear spoiler and brackets. Solid trunk, floors and torque boxes that have not been undercoated. The car is basically done outside of the sunroof motor needing to be rebuilt and new headliner installed after. The sunroof opens manually with no issues, smooth and straight. Dash has a hairline 2" split left of the tach, a common place and should not be a big deal to fix. Interior is very nice with original seats and door panels in good shape. The rare and expensive 4 spd console was added. Rimblow steering wheel is very nice but doesn"t blow. I have a restored original AM radio which will be included in the sale. All Glass is very nice. Original Cyclone wheels and trim rings are very nice and look Awesome. There are no muscle cars from this era that offer this level of power, handling and trim in the price range I have put on this car. Lots of money has been spent and quality work done. The car is simply beautiful and stunning to see in person and a pleasure to drive. 70-71 Cyclones are expensive cars to restore and parts are hard to find. This is a fantastic opportunity for a serious Cyclone Collector.
Car is sold as-is. Inspections are welcome. Please call (919) 395-7836 with any questions
