Vehicle description
1970 Dodge Charger 500 Project Car
Original plum crazy 383 4 barrel backed by a pistol grip shifter, 4-speed transmission and 8-3/4 non-sure grip rear axle. White bucket seat interior with a center console was paired with a white vinyl top. I could not find any evidence of a white tail stripe having ever been on the car. Came factory with air conditioning, manual brakes, power steering, 3-speed wiper motor, and front sway bar. Recent barn find, having been tucked away in storage for nearly 20 years. Motor and transmission are long since gone. Both body numbers, dash VIN, and reproduction fender tag all match a clear Wyoming title in my name. Fender tag was assembled to the best of my ability from as-found components, and identifying marks on the car. I have not had any success in locating a factory buildsheet.
Exterior
Charger is very presentable and solid, yet shows signs of tougher times. Both rear quarter panels have been replaced with earlier production 3/4 panels as offered by Year One. Outer wheel well lips were patched at the time. Transition of the lower front quarter panels into the rocker panel was poorly done and Bondo was used to fill in the seam area previously occupied by factory lead. Trunk lid is mostly dry with a few rust areas along the rear lip and some damage along the top near the rear edge. Rear valence panel, below the rear bumper, has repair patches showing their age and will need to be replaced. Rocker panels are solid with no issues. Driver side door is solid with no swelling in the lower pinch weld and has stress cracking around the door latch area. Cowl side and door jamb are in great condition. Passenger side door is from a 68 Charger and will need slight modification to relocate the door lock knob. Cowl side is nice and door striker area has been poorly repaired to address cracking around the striker. Driver side front fender has minor rust swelling in the lower rear pantleg and prior damage repair to the front, just behind the bumper surround. Passenger side front fender has more extensive rust in the lower rear pantleg and minor dents/damage near the front. Hood is solid with a previous repair to the left front corner. Hood mounted turn signal housings are intact. Roof and rear B-pillars are surprisingly solid for a vinyl top car with only a few rust spots starting to show up around the corner of the lower RH rear window. Front windshield surround area is dry with no rust. Frame rails are dry with rust in the outer ends of the transmission cross member where it meets the inside of the rocker panel. Front leaf spring mount on the driver side is pulled back from an apparent impact with a parking curb or other significant obstruction. Windows have typical scratches of a 50+ year old car and front windshield is cracked. Window trim is complete with dents and dings. Drip rail moldings will likely need replaced as they are badly twisted. Front grill appears to be complete with damage to the lower left corner as bumper has been tweaked.
Engine Compartment
Front inner fenders are dry and rust free other than surface rust in the battery tray area. Cowl and firewall weld seams are nice with no swelling. Firewall and inner fenders have not been cut or modified. I believe the front frame rails may be turned up slightly, possibly from an impact to the bottom of the K-frame, as the inner fenders are both kinked in the area above the shock tower supports. Inspection of the frame rails does not show any buckling or impact damage and the front clip assembly lines up well with the doors and cowl. I"ve seen similar damage on cars that are drag raced and the rails tip up from repeated bouncing after the car launches.
Interior
Passenger compartment floor pan is mostly solid with rust through in the driver side foot area and a small spot in the passenger front pan. A new LH front floor pan section is included to facilitate the driver side repair. 4-speed hump had been removed to accommodate the floor section replacement and is currently held in place with self tapping screws. Balance of floor pan beneath seats is still vibrant plum crazy. Dash is mostly complete, missing the radio. Dash pad is cracked. Glovebox door opens and closes. Console brackets were previously removed for an aftermarket shifter installation however the wiring harness for the console floor illumination lights is still in place. Seats have split seams and driver seat has minor foam damage along outer seat back. I do not have seat belts for the front bucket seats. Headliner is removed and all headliner bows are numbered from front to back with ends identified as left/right for proper installation. Door panels and soft parts will need replaced.
Trunk
Trunk floor is solid with typical pitting and minor pinholes in the lower center section. LH trunk extension appears to have been replaced.
