Vehicle description

This 1969 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was refurbished under previous ownership. We purchased it in 2019 and converted it into an electric vehicle in July 2020. Video links below. We used the car as a daily drive to test everything out and it is a lot of fun to drive. The "GhiaWatt" has more oomph than the original gas-powered version, and shifting still gets to be an integral part of driving a sporty classic car.
The HPEVS AC-51 is an 8.9″-diameter, 144-volt electric motor that is rated by the manufacturer at 88 horsepower and 108 lb-ft of torque. The car also has a Curtis 1239 motor controller, ElCon 2.5kW charter, and ElCon DC-to-DC converter fitted.
The charger is fitted in the front trunk and can be charged from a standard 110V plug or a J1772 Level 2 charger. We fitted 44 CALB 100Ah battery cells in a box behind the front seats. It takes approximately 7 hours to fully charge on a 110V plug, and it takes approximately 3 hours to charge on the Level 2 charger.
The range is 40-65 miles on a full charge, depending on the weight of passengers/cargo, temperature and driving conditions. The batteries must be charged at temperatures above 32º Fahrenheit per the battery manufacturer. They can be stored and driven at lower temperatures.
The four-speed manual transaxle was installed by the previous owner in place of the factory Autostick unit, and a Kennedy Stage 2 clutch, new shift linkage bushings, a pressure plate, and a lightened flywheel have also been added. We replaced the transaxle fluid and the passenger side transaxle final drive seal in February 2021. This car does not leak at all!
The car is finished in blue over charcoal cloth upholstery. The seats are from a 1990 Mazda NA Miata. The previous owner (a VW mechanic) painted the car dark blue (previously red). The previous owner fitted r eplacement ball joints, tie rod ends, suspension bushings, shocks, a replacement brake master cylinder, lines and hoses, and front calipers, rotors, and pads. The rear wheel cylinders and shoes were also replaced along with the wiring harness. The previous owner replaced the heater channels, rocker panels, and body seals. It has chrome strips on the lower panels, a driver-side mirror, and bumpers with guards. It has n ew gray square-weave carpets along with a replacement black dash pad, door panels, and a white headliner. We mounted a trickle charger for the 12V battery, which is used for auxiliaries like the lights and horn, in case the car will be stored for long periods.
The two-spoke steering wheel frames a 90-mph VDO speedometer, while an ampere-hour meter is fitted in the dash, and battery life and voltage gauges are mounted below. The five-digit odometer shows 62k miles, approximately 700 of which were added during current ownership. The horn button is cracked, and the clock and fuel-level gauge do not work.
The 15″ body-color steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps and Kelly tires. A matching spare wheel with a Continental tire is included in the sale.
There is evidence of repairs to the nose, which can only be seen inside the front trunk. The paint has some minor scratches, chips, and bubbles as well as damage to the rear Karmann Ghia badge. It"s a decent driver quality job, but definitely not perfect.
The rear seats, a parcel shelf, and original gas tank were removed for the EV conversion, but they are included in the sale. The Karmann Ghia has a clean Virginia title and comes with a basic owner"s manual for the EV unique characteristics. The EV conversion is fully reversible if you wanted to restore the car to gas-power.
