For sale: Original western survivor 1969 GMC C-10/1500 barn find. Sold new at Grimes Buick/GMC in Helena, Montana and never left the Rocky Mountain front. Purchased on August 27, 1969 by Yuhas Millwork, a local cabinet maker still in business at the same location. After a couple of years delivering cabinets with it, they sold the truck to the local "Little Chief" service station owner in 1971, and he and his family owned it for the next 50 years. The service station owner"s daughter and son-in-law were longtime friends of mine. They both recently passed away, and I purchased it from their son, who as a teenager had driven the truck while working at his Grandpa"s service station. Documentation includes original owners manual, warranty booklet and owner card, and original keys and blanks with envelope. Factory cowl chalk marks still there, original jack and tools still behind the seat, and factory under-bed spare tire carrier still present. Original "safety-plate" windshield in very good condition. Truck even has both original T-3 high beam headlights. Vintage topper/canopy shown is included, and it"s in very good condition. Also included are two snow tires mounted on extra rims, a set of tire chains, and a roadside flare/flasher kit. I"ll do my best to describe this special truck below, please see the Flickr album below for detailed pics including undercarriage.
Exterior: Straight truck with a clean look, original paint is faded to a nice patina. Hood was damaged at the service station and has been replaced and repainted, and it doesn"t match perfectly. GMC hood letters are included. Does have some of the typical cosmetic rust in the rockers, cab corners, and floors. Cab mounting areas are solid, and windshield frame and drip rail look great. While the truck was never subjected to salted roads, the lower cab areas hold dirt/mud that plugs the drain holes and draws moisture. South Central MT is arid country, and trucks typically survive pretty well here. Chrome/stainless is bright and not pitted. Even original "safety-plate" windshield in very good condition. Underside has light surface discoloration on frame and bare metal components, but of course we don"t see frame rot here out west. The factory chalk marks are still visible on the cowl, and on the frame. Factory original wood bed is intact save one small broken spot near back of bed. Topper/canopy is in very good condition with no damage other than a ding in the top rear edge. Check the detail pics in the referenced Flickr album below.
Interior: Mostly original and looks nice. Original dash pad not cracked, and seat was recently redone in the correct-looking vinyl. I believe everything works, lights, parking brake, wipers, heater, radio, and all gauges except fuel gauge(appears to be sending unit float). I wish my other 67-72 GM truck heaters worked this well! Original glass is good including windshield. Chrome/stainless not pitted. Both doors lock with same key as ignition, driver window needs lubrication, it won"t roll down smoothly. Clean, tight driver truck that"s ready to use as is.
Mechanical: Starts, runs, and drives out fine. Truck has a nice tight original feel. As you would expect from a service station owner, truck was well maintained and it shows. Engine appears to be the original 200hp 307 engine(WH suffix code, 68-69 307) and it has good oil pressure and vacuum, runs smooth with no noises or smoke(other than puff at startup from valve seals) . Mobil 1 synthetic oil has been used since the late 70s. Automatic trans shifts fine and power steering feels tight. I believe everything works save the fuel gauge, which appears to be a sunken float on the sending unit. Even parking brake works. As with any older vehicle, it will need maintenance and repairs along the way. If you live in a state with very strict vehicle inspections, they will no doubt find something for you to fix, so expect that. These trucks are noted for reliability and build quality, and are fairly simple to work on with good parts availability.
