• Numbers matching L46 optional 350HP 350CID V-8 engine (code: HW) • Original Muncie four-speed manual transmission • LeMans Blue exterior (code 976) • Black vinyl interior with black soft top • Power brakes and power steering • Turbine wheels • Hardtop included • Recent new rear suspension
In its second model year, the third-generation Corvette was selling well, with nearly 40,000 copies in 1969. This example, as with all Corvettes made between 1954 and mid-1981 was made in General Motors’ St. Louis, Missouri factory. The L46-code 350/350 V8 under the hood of this LeMans Blue 1969 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe is the numbers-matching original, the Muncie four-speed manual is also the original installed at the factory in St. Louis.
Chevrolet’s ubiquitous 350-cu.in. small-block engine made its Corvette debut in 1969. Though offered as the base engine, with just 300 horsepower, the 350 also came in L46 guise, rated at 350 horsepower. Fully one-third of Corvette customers opted for the L46 engine that year, making it the car’s most popular power plant.
Dressed in correct LeMans Blue, (code 976) the car’s paint and trim are in overall decent order but the paint demonstrates some older age with some scratches and chips in the fiberglass. Overall, though the body is nice and straight. The engine bay is very tidy and chrome bumpers and trim fit tightly to the body.
This car rolls on BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires, size 255/60R15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on a turbine-style alloy wheel. All wheels and tires are in very good order.
Under the forward-hinged hood is a numbers matching 300HP 350 CID V-8 engine (code L46, engine code HW) with Quick Fuel carburetor. Backing it up is a four-speed Muncie manual transmission. Driver convenience features include power brakes and power steering.
Inside is a black vinyl interior that is overall satisfactory order, from the bucket seats to the matching carpet, the three-spoke steering wheel, dash, inner door panels and center console with shifter. An aftermarket AM/FM stereo rounds out the cabin.
In 1969, small block engine displacement increased from 327 CID to 350 CID, though output remained the same. All other engines and transmission choices remained unchanged from the previous year, though the L30 base engine was now the ZQ3 and the L79 motor was redesignated the L46. All cars featured eight-inch-wide steel wheels (increased from seven inches).
Tire size remained the same, although this was the first year for optional white lettered tires and the last for red striped tires. Carried over from the previous year were seven available rear axle ratios ranging from 2.73 to 4.56. Standard ratio remained 3.08 with automatic and 3.36 with manual transmission.
The optional Positraction rear axle, mandated on many engine/gearbox combinations, was installed on more than 95 percent of the cars. “Stingray” script nameplates appeared on front fenders, now one word, in contrast to the “Sting Ray” name used previously. Exterior door handles were redesigned so the finger plate would actuate the door, eliminating the separate release button. Backup lights were integrated into the inboard taillights, headlight washers were added, and front grilles were made all black.
Side-mounted exhausts and front fender vent trim were options for this year only. On the inside, revised door panels provided additional shoulder room in the C3’s tighter cabin and headrests became standard. Steering wheel diameter was reduced from 16 to 15 inches to permit easier entry and exit, the ignition switch was moved from the dash to the steering column, and map pockets were added to the dash area in front of the passenger seat.
Accounting for 57 percent of the cars, coupes with their removable roof panels, began a trend of outselling roadsters. An extended production cycle due to a labor dispute increased ‘69 volume. This was the last year for the L88 engine and the only year for the ZL1 option, which offered an all-aluminum 427 CID big-block engine.
Competition to this Corvette in 1969 included Porsche’s 911. If you’re looking for a honest 1969 LeMans Blue Corvette droptop L46 with a 4-speed this might be the one for you. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to look it over for yourself.
