Vehicle description
Oldsmobile 442.
Second generation (1968-1972)
The 4-4-2 became a separate model from 1968 through 1971. The wheelbase was 112 in (2,845 mm), and over 33,000 were sold for 1968. Despite the engine displacement staying at 400 CID, the engine was based on the new 455 cranktrain (4.25 stroke) and the bore decreased (to 3.87). Torque now came at 30003200 rpm as opposed to the early 400"s 3600 rpm peak, mostly due to a milder base cam grind. Car Life tested a 1968 4-4-2 with a 3.23:1 rear axle ratio and Hydromatic and attained 060 times of 7.0 seconds, and a quarter-mile time of 15.13 seconds at 92 mph (148 km/h). Top speed was reported as 115 mph (185 km/h). The base motor was still rated at 350 hp (261 kW), but only with the standard three-speed and optional four-speed; automatics were rated at 325 hp (242 kW). W-30s were rated again at 360 hp (268 kW). Car Life also tested a four-speed W-30 with 4.33 rearend gears and recorded a 13.3 at 103.30 mph (166.2 km/h), which shows the long stroke did not affect actual performance although long term durability at high (6000 plus) engine speeds might be affected.
All standard 1968 4-4-2 engines are painted a bronze copper color, as with the 1967s, topped with a fire-red air cleaner. W-30 option cars were equipped with Ram Air intake hoses leading from a chrome-topped dual snorkel black air cleaner to special under-bumper air scoops and set off by bright red plastic fender wells. RUST FREE
SOLID AND STRAIGHT ALL AROUND
GREAT CHROME AND GLASS
WELL MAINTAINED, GARAGE KEPT
ALL THE LIGHTS AND GAUGES ARE IN WORKING ORDER
WHITE CONVERTIBLE TOP IN GOOD CONDITION, 1 TINY TEAR RUB IN BACK OF TOP
NOT A TRUE W30 CAR
numbers matching or year correct engine
I have owned this 442 since 1996. The car spent most of its life in Florida, I believe it was stored in a car trailer from the early 80s until I purchased in 1996, then it was in a garage.
The car had only light rust on lower fenders only and they were replaced when I had the car painted in 2008.
It is totally rust free only minor flaking on under carriage and trunk is rust free, no issues at all From sitting for so long the heads were rebuilt and new lifters installed before my purchase. I brought it to NJ and stored in my garage. Over the years I rebuilt the front suspension and rear suspension.
the 400 engine and 400 transmission were rebuilt around 2002 and all parts came from Mondello performance. It was bored to 60 over with custom cam for best performance I did not have the heads rebuilt since they were done pre purchase but that was a bad idea, she smokes slightly when idling they need new guides
The car has most power options
3 speed 400 automatic transmission
power disc brakes with standard 1 piston calipers for reliable stopping
the original 4 piston calipers were removed because of leakage but I have all the parts to reinstall
also has power windows
power drivers seat
cruise control : not working
tilt wheel
air conditioning
tic tok tac in working condition
I have original radio and misc. interior parts from a 1969 vista cruiser including lower kick panels many extra parts in storage
the car was triple white from factory, minor dents were repaired
In 2008 I had the car completely stripped and it is now a nice pearl blue paint and has a pearl white stripes
2008 nissan rouge color
I never really considered selling her, but giving it a shot
The ram air was installed by selling dealer is what I was told. No proof of that the ram air has original type fiberglass ducts I installed red fender wells when body was all apart for paint
The front seats have newer seat covers and rear seat is original condition
I am sure I have forgotten a few things and will work on that
I would say condition is a 7 out of ten she needs more love and time then I can give her
please remember it is 53 years old
