1968 Ford Mustang Hardtop Vehicle Information VIN: 8R01C169421 Mileage: 51,759 Color: Highland Green Trans: Cruise-O-Matic three-speed automatic Engine: 289 V-8 Title: Clear Interior: Nugget Gold Video Description 1968 Ford Mustang Hardtop
• Only 2 family owned, low-mileage, well-optioned Mustang • Sold new at Casey Meyers Ford, Inc., in St. Joseph, Missouri • The original Missouri family owned the Mustang until 2016 • Only one of 774 Mustang Hardtops ordered in this paint/trim code in 1968 • 289 CID V-8 engine with optional louvered hood • Cruise-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission (code W) and 2.79 gearing (code 2) • Highland Green exterior (code R) with black vinyl roof and Nugget Gold vinyl interior (code 2Y) • Selectaire air-conditioning and power steering • Correct whitewall tires with the origonal wheel covers • Documentation includes original owner’s manual, original window sticker, a Marti Report, photos and information about the original female owner
After its big sales splash in 1964, Ford’s Mustang came in for its first set of major changes for 1967, inside and out. The following year’s alterations were minimal by comparison and the car remained popular with buyers as the 1960s drew to a close.
This survivor example was made in Ford’s San Jose, California assembly plant (VIN code R) on July 22, 1968 and was shipped by rail on July 23 to Casey Meyers Ford, Inc., in St. Joseph, Missouri at the corner of Eighth and Sylvanie – almost a reverse Pony Express route for this pony!
It was originally sold on August 4, 1968 to the Karl family of St. Joseph Missouri. When Mr. Karl passed Mrs. Karl stored the Mustang in a heated and carpeted garage while she drover her Lincoln Town car. In the year 2000 with 47k miles on the clock Mrs. Karl gave the Mustang to her Nephew John and he owned the car until 2016 when he sold the Mustang to a family in Macon Missouri.
It left the factory with the following options – 289 V-8 engine; black vinyl roof; Cruise-O-Matic; louvered hood; power steering; white sidewall tires; Selectaire air-conditioning; AM radio; tinted glass; wheel covers; and front and rear bumper guards.
Finished in correct Highland Green (code R), the car’s paint and trim are in overall excellent order. The body is straight and solid, the engine bay is quite tidy, the battery appears new and the chrome, wraparound bumpers fit tightly to the body and shine well.
This car rolls on Milestar Touring SE whitewalls, size 195/75R14 at every corner. The tires are mounted on steel wheels topped with factory, vented wheel covers. The wheel covers look great and the tires are in good shape.
Under that optional louvered hood is 289 CID V-8 engine with two-barrel carburetor. It’s buttoned to a Cruise-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission (code W) with a 2.79:1 rear end (code 2). Driver convenience features include Selectaire air-conditioning and power steering.
Inside the car is done in two-tone, brown and Nugget Gold (code 2Y). The front buckets and rear bench are upholstered in that gold vinyl and look ready for a trip. The brown carpet complements the upholstery and looks great. The headliner is tan and there’s a brown over tan instrument panel that looks very mod. The inner door panels are also in very good order. A floor-mounted shift lever and a factory AM radio complete the interior.
Changes for the 1968 model increased safety with a two-spoke energy-absorbing steering wheel, along with newly introduced shoulder belts. Other changes included front and rear side markers, “FORD” lettering removed from the hood, rearview mirror moved from frame to windshield. The 1968 models that were produced from January 1968 were also the first model year to incorporate three-point lap and shoulder belts (which had previously been optional in 1967–1968 models) as opposed to the standard lap belts. The air-conditioning option was fully integrated into the dash, the speakers and stereo were upgraded, and unique center and overhead consoles were options. The fastback model offered the option of a rear fold-down seat, and the convertible was available with folding glass windows. The convenience group with four warning lights for low fuel, seat belt reminder, parking brake not released and door ajar were added to the instrument panel, or, if one ordered the optional console and A/C, the lights were mounted on the console.
Competition to this Mustang in 1968 included Chevrolet’s Camaro, Mercury’s Cougar, Pontiac’s Firebird and Plymouth’s Barracuda.

Nearly 60 years after it created the ponycar market, it’s getting harder to find low-mileage survivor models like this one.
