Vehicle description
For sale: Survivor 1968 Galaxie Fastback, original big block "sleeper" car with 1967 Shelby GT500 428-8V engine. I bought this car out of a Montana barn 12 years ago from the original owner"s estate(see pics) and have enjoyed it immensely over the last decade. Car was purchased new on September 9, 1968 at Wink Ford in Havre, MT by a prominent fellow there for his wife, he paid $3,250.00 in cash. Their son was present at the dealership that day and recalled it well - he begged his Mom to pick an XL with bucket seats and floor shift, but she was conservative, and thought that nonsense too "flashy". It"s a straight, tight, 88k original mile rust free car with all docs including original manuals, sales invoice, and owner card. At the time I was looking for a "cruise night car" that I could actually enjoy, instead of the Shelby and Boss cars I owned that were just too nice to drive. A fellow Shelby enthusiast friend had a 67 date coded GT500 428-8V engine, and a plan was made to replace the original 390 in the Galaxie with that 428. What resulted was a comfortable, great cruising car with 400hp on tap when needed at the stoplight. The 428 engine came out of a standard rotation fresh water jet boat built for Lake Shasta by Vic Hubbard Speed and Marine of Hayward, California. It"s a 7C21 dated "A" scratch C6ME block with 1U crank, PI rods, 14 bolt C7AE-A heads with the HD springs and one-piece retainters, C7ZX intake, C5AF dual point distributor, and 7F29 dated C6AE water pump. The 1967 date coded BJ and BK carbs were still on the engine when I got it, but I sold those to a fellow GT500 owner who was in dire need for a concours restoration. It"s running Holley 1850s now, which are functionally identical and work great. It"s a sorted car that"s ready to jump in and drive. I"ll do my best to describe this special car below, please see the FLICKR album with detailed pics including undercarriage and the YouTube walk around and start up video.
Exterior: Mostly original paint that still shines and presents well. Straight overall with a few dings, one notable at the back of the passenger rear quarter - that came from a pole in the barn where it was stored. One previous repair at the back of the driver rear quarter where the original old lady owner backed into a gas station island. Very dry car, never saw road salt and was undercoated when new. (see underside pics in FLICKR album). No pitting on exterior or interior chrome. There is some light surface rust in trunk, and a few very small pencil tip blisters behind both wheels - see pics - had to zoom in very close to even see them. Central Montana is arid country with low humidity and cars tend to survive very well here. No holes were drilled for Cobra badges, they are stick-on. Original 390 badges included. Glass is good except windshield, which is cracked. Side moldings have some dings, and rear quarter panel side moldings were "spliced" with different pieces, look closely you can see it. Check the detail pics in the referenced FLICKR album below.
Interior: Clean, original, and nice. Original headliner, door panels and carpet in good condition. I had seats reupholstered. Dash is cracked by speaker as is typical. I believe everything works - all lights, gauges, wipers, heater, e-brake, etc. Tachometer is an original Cobra unit and not a reproduction. Windshield has a crack under the wipers as shown. No rodents ever (rare for a barn-stored car) and no smells. Clean, comfortable driver that"s ready to use.
Mechanical: Starts, runs, and drives out great. Car is tight with a low mile feel. 428 starts effortlessly and idles smoothly. Acceleration is crisp with a nice induction roar. Engine was freshened up prior to install and that included new Hastings rings on standard bore pistons, valve job, new Melling M57B oil pump and all new Fel-Pro gaskets. Cam is .480 lift intake and .510 exhaust. Crank is .010 under on the mains and .020 on the rods. The original 355bhp has been bumped up to 400 hp with the larger cam and ceramic coated Sanderson headers. Also running a Pro-Tork starter. Original automatic trans shifts well. All new stainless 2.5" Flowmaster exhaust. Original 2.75 gears were upgraded to 3.25 for all-around cruising. BFG T/A tires and 15x7 "Hurst" wheels and tires were all new 2 years ago. Has the Ford Galaxie "anti-theft" system neutral safety- you need to lift up on the shift lever to start it. Probably could stand a new set of shocks, I think it"s still wearing the originals. Factory manual drum brakes are fine out here on our empty Montana back roads, but might want to upgrade to power front disc for clogged urban highways if that"s your venue.
