Vehicle description
Listed at No Reserve, 1968 AMC AMX 390/4spd/Documented Go Package car, original white with red interior, and black stripes, included original warranty card and dealer invoice stating Go Pack (Pwr Pkg $310.85) Quick ratio steering, and tinted windshield, very low option car, ordered for performance. Car is mostly original, and very solid, and runs and drives well. I drive it locally a few times a month, but it is not something I would drive home cross country. To be a show car it will require a complete restoration. To be a presentable driver it will need a paint job and carpet at the very least. I have written a detailed description below, however, this car is over half a century old, and surely I will miss some details. I will be available throughout the listing time to answer questions and can do Face Time walk arounds. Please ask all questions before bidding.
Body and paint condition are as follows, the body is solid, I have taken a soft magnet all around the car. It sticks everywhere except behind the rear wheels, below the character line. Regardless of climate most "68-"70 Amx"s rust here, this one is no exception. The rest of the quarter panels are excellent. The driver"s front fender had a minor repair decades ago, there is a thin, skim coat of filler in the area that the paint has come loose. Otherwise this fender is very nice and rust free, it will not require replacement. The floors and frame rails are exceptional as can be seen in the underside pictures. There are minor bubbles on the trunk lid, and the paint is starting to blister near the base of the rear window. I don"t think this will require patching, however, until the paint is removed I can"t say for sure. Doors are excellent and free of rust, as is the hood. The trunk floor has some surface rust on the top, and two small holes were cut in the trunk, apron 3 inches by 3 inches on either side near the tail panel. These were done for the air shock lines, they have small sheet metal patches now, but will require small welded in patches to repair properly if one wants. Overall, one of the most solid classic cars I have seen in this part of the country. It has been repainted once, have the receipt, in 1985 or so, paint quality is poor, but it does have a decent shine. One could match the paint on the driver"s fender and drive it as is.
Interior condition is fair, the original red interior has faded from sun exposure and should be redyed. The carpet should be replaced as well as the headliner. The steering wheel has cracks, the sun visors, door panels, and dash are pretty nice. The seat covers are pretty good but were recovered in incorrect pattern.
Mechanical condition is fair to good, the engine runs excellent, has good oil pressure, power, and runs cool. The front suspension was rebuilt and aligned recently, recent front brakes, and Centerforce clutch. The car starts easily and handles well. I don"t believe the original engine has ever been out of the car, but it does have an Edelbrock Torquer intake, Holley mechanical secondary carb, headers, MSD ignition, and I believe a high performance camshaft. I have the original distributor and intake manifold to go with it, but not the original carb or exhaust manifolds. The original vacuum wipers are not working, the heater core is bypassed, and the gas gauge works intermittently. All of the lights work fine including turn signals and break lights, speedometer is correct. Tach works but reads incorrectly due to MSD ignition. While the clutch and transmission work well, the pilot bearing is noisy at idle with the clutch pedal out, the noise goes away when you push the clutch in. The transmission grinds slightly on the shift into third, especially when shifting quickly. I suspect the transmission has weak synchros and should be looked at eventually. This does not prevent the car from being driven and has gotten no worse under my ownership.
All in all, while this is a project, I believe it is a worthy one, and priced very competitively with other AMX projects I have seen listed recently, especially as it is a no reserve auction with a low opening bid.
Please make sure your finances are in order before bidding. If you have less than 5 feedback, or excessive negative feedback, please contact me prior to bidding. PayPal is accepted as a deposit only, I will not accept it for the balance of payment. Bank wire transfer, cash, or cashier"s check are accepted. The vehicle will not ship prior to funds clearing.
