Vehicle description
FOR SALE 1965 Volkswagen Type 1 21 Window Samba-Bus BACKGROUND This beautifully restored 2 nd owner Volkswagen 21 window Samba-Bus (also known as Sunroof Deluxe), was the most luxurious version of the Type 1 buses, and has proven to be one of the most sought after and desired Volkswagens on the market today. VW buses were informally classified according to the number of windows they had. This particular 21 window model includes eight panoramic windows in the roof, two pivot doors on the side (vs. a sliding door), and a brand-new fabric sunroof. At that time Volkswagen advertised with the idea of using the Samba to make tourist trips through the Alps. Sambas were painted standard in two colors. The upper part is painted in the original VW white, and lower portion of the body is finished in original VW Sea Blue. The two-colored sections were separated by a decorative strip, which on this bus has been painstakingly straightened, restored and buffed to “as new” luster. KEY HIGHLIGHTS · This is a true New England barn find, which was uncovered and pulled out of a barn in Quincy, MA. The bus had been stored in a garage and was covered in over 40-years of dust, debris, boxes and more since it’s last registration date of 1978 (see images). · Has undergone a nearly six-year restoration of every nut, bolt and screw by one fastidious and particular owner. This restoration was a labor of love, using N.O.S. parts whenever possible, and many parts found over time. The metal work is precise and the sides are more straight and smooth than when it rolled off the assembly line in Hanover, Germany back in 1965. · This bus has had a complete and meticulous rebuild of its 1,493CC air-cooled flat-four engine, completed by VW microbus specialist Gary LeBlank of Suburban Engine Exchange 5,850 miles ago to original specifications and colors. · Completely rebuilt transmission and reduction boxes, makes this four-speed transmission shift effortlessly through the gears and a joy to drive. · All new precision fitted belly pans and floorboards for a finished look underneath. · Original paint combination of VW White upper and Sea Blue lower combination is smooth and blemish free (see images). Additionally, every inner-panel of the car has been completely sprayed to ensure a lasting restoration. · Images show the complete matching and original interior in Salt & Pepper Gray, including the highly desirable and often missing 2 nd row. The interior upholstery is awaiting the new owners finishing touches to totally complete the restoration. Retractable sunroof has been carefully restored with new sliders, and fabric cover. The original interior knobs, switches and controls all look and work perfectly, including the original Blaupunkt Sapphire Telefunken radio and clock. · All original VW glass on all 21 windows with all new rubber seals fitted. · New wiring harnesses for the original 6-volt electrical system. · This vehicle has some additional historical significance both to potential US and Canadian buyers in that when it was only two-years old, the original owners made the road trip to the 1967 Montreal Expo (World’s Fair). Original sticker can be seen on the rear glass (see pictures), a very rare piece of memorabilia. The bottom line is this vehicle runs, drives and stops as new and is waiting for a new home for someone to complete the interior. Clean title in hand. There are many other mechanical and body parts that go with this vehicle, too many to list in this post, including the original owners-manual. Serious buyers only. Please contact Joel at 603-320-6828.
