Vehicle description
1965 Plymouth Valiant V200 Convertible
The Basics Vehicle was originally a rust free California car. Currently has a clear Georgia Title. Previous owner restored to current condition, we have owned the vehicle for 7 years and made some improvements. 225 Six-cylinder rebuilt and updated with hardened valve seats and Chrysler electronic ignition. Rebuilt A904 3 speed automatic transmission, original style cable shift trans (Column shift). Manual Top – White, has a few small discolored spots (visible in photos) All new Red Interior, including seat covers, door panels, dash pad, and visors.
Improvements Made Updated the original 9” 4 wheel drum brakes with Front disk and 10” rear drums from 1973 Valiant. This included upper control arms with the larger ball joints (new), spindles, backing plates, calipers (new), lower ball joints (new), and brake hoses (new. The original 7.25” rear axle (bad axle bearing) was replaced with a 7.25” rear axle from a 1973 valiant, it was cleaned, painted, new axle seals, new drum brake shoes, hardware, wheel cylinder, hard lines, brake hose, parking cables, and drums (10” x 2”) were installed. The conversion from drum to disk brake required changing the master cylinder to a disk/drum dual reservoir type, and a proportioning valve (73 Valiant) was also added. These are all Chrysler factory components used on 1973 Valiant and readily available. The conversion also changed the wheel bolt circle from 5x4” to 5x4.5” which required new wheels. 5 used 14x5.5” factory steel rims with correct bolt pattern were refinished and fitted with new Hankook P205/75R14 tires (including spare). A set of OEM 14” wheel covers were also added. The 5x4.5” bolt circle is a much more common (available) size if custom alloy wheels are desired. The original manual steering gear was replaced with a power steering system including rebuilt PS pump, new hoses, a remanufactured PS steering box, and the shorter steering shaft, with new coupler. An original AM/FM radio was also installed (works correctly on both bands), and a dual speaker was installed in place of the mono speaker in the dash. Most of the parts removed for the improvements are included with the vehicle if the buyer desires them.
The not so good The addition of the PS feels like overkill for such a light vehicle. Personally I would switch it back to manual steering if I were to keep it. (parts included with vehicle) It was aligned after the PS and disk brakes were added, but I think it could be better. Maybe it’s just the PS making the steering too light. As mentioned there are a couple of discolorations on the convertible top. I never tried to clean them as I always have to top down when cruising in it. The paint looks very nice, but there is a small chip on the right side edge of the hood (very small), and a small outward dent in the middle of the trunk lid (from something in the trunk when it was closed), that caused the paint to crack on the exterior and left marks on the inner trunk lid. (I have some of the original paint the vehicle was painted with for touch-ups). The aluminum trim on front fenders/doors is a bit cloudy and the black painted inserts could use touched up.
The Good It’s a fun reliable classic car great for cruising and car shows, that always gets lots of smiles and thumbs up. Very easy to maintain and all improvements were made with factory replacement parts. So any future maintenance or repairs will be easy to obtain parts for. I would rate this vehicle as a very solid #3
