Vehicle description
1965 Mustang Convertible listed at No Reserve, V8 automatic car with low options, manual steering and brakes, but drives nice and easy despite that, I bought it from the long term owner that had it since the early nineties, she took great care of it. It had an amateur restoration before she bought it and it has been stored in a garage and maintained by a mechanic ever since. It has not been driven in the winter since then, but it has always been a midwestern car. I will describe condition in detail below. The car is far from perfect, but it probably could be driven home as it just completed a 4hr round trip to Road America and back reliably. Priced with a realistic opening bid and no reserve, I would like to see it go to a good home. Please ask all questions before bidding, I am happy to do a Face Time walk around during the auction.
Body and paint condition are fair, the car was restored around 1990 and looks great from 20" even now. But the work that was done was typical of the time and has not aged real well. The paint is not faded and is still very shiny, but there is bubbling in the corners of the doors. The rear quarters had partial replacement and if you stick your head inside the trunk you can see the flanges where they were welded. The trunk and floors are solid but the floor has been patched in the front, still holding up well but you can easily tell from underneath. At least one of the torque boxes has rust issues, the rear frame rails are solid. The front rails have some very small soft spots but appear to be structurally sound. The front fenders, hood, and trunk lid are all nice and rust free. The trim including bumpers, grill, taillights, and rocker moldings are nice. The driver"s door mirror is missing, and I removed the front fender emblems because they had been mounted slightly off from there they should be. I felt it looked better without them. I have the original wheels and hubcaps and they are included as well as the wheels and tires currently on the car and shown in the pics. I am probably making it sound worse than it is, but I prefer to have someone be pleasantly surprised when they see it in person. Literally every time my wife or I take the car out we get compliments and thumbs up, more so than any other car we have owned.
Interior condition is good overall, the seats were recovered with Pony interior style covers although it is a standard interior car. One or two small rips in the seats, door panels are fine, needs carpet badly and a driver"s side arm rest. The dash and steering wheel are nice, power tops works well, aftermarket am/fm radio works, as do the wipers, lights, turn signals. The top and rear window are in good condition except for the one small tear shown in the pic.
Mechanicals are good, transmission was rebuilt recently, and it runs good. I believe the engine is not the original based on the intake manifold casting number, which suggests it is a 1968 289 or 302. It can sit in the garage for a month, pump the gas a bunch of times and it fires right up. I trust the car enough mechanically that my wife drives it, and I never worry about it letting her down. Suspension and brakes are fine, the battery and tires are new. It does not have power steering, however, it is the easiest manual steering classic car I have driven. The exhaust is old and while it is complete, I noted an exhaust leak near the muffler by the rear axle, I suggest replacing it. It also has what looks like a slow leak at the rear pinion seal on the axle. that said, I trust the car completely to drive locally and even several hours on the road, weather permitting.
