Another fine Mustang has entered our paddock at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. This example is a stunning restored 1965 Mustang convertible that is finished in red and black with a power white top. This convertible is also optioned with power steering, power brakes and a 289 V8 engine with an automatic transmission.
This example was made at Ford’s San Jose, California factory on August 18, 1964, and was originally delivered locally to a dealer within the San Jose sales district.
Dressed in red, the car’s paint and trim are in overall excellent condition, there is a new, white power-folding vinyl top, the bodywork is straight and the engine bay is very tidy as well as the undercarriage. In the trunk is a full-sized spare tire with a cover and the rest of the cargo bay is clean and in good order. The chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body.
This pony rolls on BFGoodrich Advantage Plus white stripe radials, size 205/75R14 at all four corners. Each tire is mounted to a steel wheel topped with a factory mag wheel. The wheels are in excellent condition while the tires look very good.
Under the hood is a 289 CID V-8 (C-Code) engine with Edelbrock dress kit, intake manifold and carburetor plus headers and dual exhausts. This motor is linked to a C-4 three-speed automatic transmission (code 6) and a 3.00:1 rear end (code 1). Driver convenience features include power steering and power brakes.
Inside, there is a black vinyl interior (code 86). The front buckets and rear bench area in very good order, as is the matching carpet. The three-spoke steering wheel looks ready for top-down adventures. The inner door panels and instrument panel are all in very good order. A floor shifter and an aftermarket AM/FM stereo with cassette deck and two speakers mounted within the inside rear quarter panels complete the interior.
Several changes to the Mustang occurred at the start of the “normal” 1965 model year in August 1964, about four months after its introduction. These cars are known as “late 65s.” The engine lineup changed, with a 200 CID “T-code” engine. A new “C-code” 289 CID engine with a two-barrel carburetor as the base V-8. An “A-Code” four-barrel carbureted version was next in line, followed by the unchanged 289 Hi-Po “K-code” equipped with a four-barrel Autolite 4100 carburetor. The DC electrical generator was replaced by a new AC alternator on all Fords (a way to distinguish a 1964 from a 1965 is to see if the alternator light on the dash says “GEN” or “ALT”).
The standard interior features of the 1965 Mustang included adjustable driver and passenger bucket seats, an AM radio, and a floor-mounted shifter in a variety of color options. Ford added additional interior options during the 1965 model year. The Interior Decor Group was popularly known as "Pony Interior" due to the addition of embossed running ponies on the seat fronts, and included integral armrests, woodgrain appliqué accents, and a round gauge cluster that would replace the standard Falcon instrumentation. Also available were sun visors, a (mechanical) remote-operated mirror, a floor console, and a bench seat. Ford later offered an under-dash air-conditioning unit and discontinued the vinyl with cloth insert seat option, offered only in early 1965 models.
The 1965 and 1966 Mustangs are differentiated by variations in the exterior, despite the similar design. These variations include the emblem on the quarter-panels behind the doors. From August 1964 production, the emblem was a single vertical piece of chrome, while for 1966 models the emblem was smaller in height and had three horizontal bars extending from the design, resembling an “E.” The front intake grilles and ornaments were also different. The 1965 front grille used a “honeycomb” pattern, while the 1966 version was a “slotted” style. While both model years used the “Horse and Corral” emblem on the grille, but the 1965s had four bars extending from each side of the corral, while these bars were removed for the 1966s.
If you’ve ever wanted a classic Mustang with a top that goes down, this example might not be one you should ignore. This droptop would make a good driver for someone while still generating plenty of attention and questions at every stop sign and fill-up or at a cruise night.
