Vehicle description
"65 Coupe with the rare L78 big block option.
L78 was the first of the Big Blocks and debuted in mid year of production. (First car built March "65.)
The Big Block was only available in "one flavor" for this first half year; domed 11/1 pistons, big solid lifter cam, deep breathing rectangular port heads, high rise manifold with Holley carb, and mandatory K66 Transistor Ignition.
Conservatively rated at 425 hp.
Air conditioning and power steering were not available with this engine.
These cars are unique in that the battery was mounted behind LEFT front fender. (Small block cars had battery under expansion tank behind right fender.)
Windshield washer reservoir is a removable bag above battery. (Small block cars had a square plastic jug.)
L78 included rear anti roll bar, larger 7/8" front anti roll, and heavy duty differential with heavy duty half shaft ends.
There were 2157 cars built with the L78, mostly convertibles.
This is one of only 618 Coupes optioned with the L78 and was built in May 1965.
Sold new on May 21, 1965 at Vince Byrne Chevrolet of Mt. Kisco NY and immediately driven to Texas.
Safety inspected 4 days later by Texas Highway Dept and given windshield sticker dated May 25, 1965 which still exists on original windshield (see photos).
Car was in Texas several decades with original owner.
Completely restored by 2nd owner in Northern California.
I am the fourth owner.
Original matching number 962 block that was only produced for "65 and early "66 cars (casting date March 17,1965 and assembled April 29, 1965).

Correct 963 intake manifold.
Muncie close ratio M21 four speed. (dated May 4, 1965)
4.11 positraction diff, code FB. (dated May 7, 1965)
