Vehicle description
1964 Rambler Classic "Cross Country" wagon. 52k miles on body, less than 3k on completely built engine.
I"m a professional car builder and fabricator with a concours win under my belt. I built this car for me and my family, which means I did everything as right as was possible. I put more into this car than it was worth, to ensure it drove well and was safe, including the addition of shoulder belts in the front and lap belts in the rear.
Car was completed and driven 80 mph daily and the transmission began failing (not catastrophically, just began growling and hard to shift until it wouldn"t.
I have too many projects in the works and need to let it go.
It has an AMC 327 with 10:1 Egge pistons, a Bullet cam, custom built intake, new valves, heads milled, completely rebuilt. . Good for about 300-325 hp and built less than 3000 miles ago. It runs at about 180 degrees.
The trans is a T-86 Borg Warner 3 on the tree with overdrive.
Clutch is a 5.0 HO Mustang replacement piece. Flywheel has been CNC re-drilled to make the clutch an off the shelf item.
3.54 axle ratio.
The exhaust is very recent and sounds bitchin. It idles low and sounds like a vintage boat. One of my favorite things about the car.
Seats were recently redone in paisley. Front straight axle, brakes, and suspension are new Speedway items.
All 4 tires are new BFG"s with under 500 miles on them.
I"ve got about 15k into this car, but I know the trans makes it my loss, your gain. I"ve got 2 modern SUV"s, a Travelall, a 48 IH, and a pizza truck I"m building. Something"s gotta go. I don"t need 4 wagons and this one can"t romp through snow or pull a car trailer like the others.
This car can be put back to stock as factory items were unbolted and things were added. Nothing has been cut up. Comes with a truckload of spares including a full set of doors, a bumper, gas tank, interior parts, trim, a vintage 3 speed floor shifter, power brake booster and master, floor blister for the shifter from a Falcon, factory shop manual, engine parts, the original radiator, and nearly 2 sets of door glass.
Car is nearly rust free (you can see all it"s got in the pics). Floorpans are flawless factory paint. The u ndercarriage of this car is rot free. there is light surface discoloration and that is it. small areas of surface rust are developing at the bottom rear of the quarters, and on a couple of doors, but no perforations as of yet. No rust in the structure of this car (cowl, floors, rockers, unibody, etc. .) It"s about as immaculate a body as you"re going to find on a 57 year old car.
The things it needed were minor sorting, like stereo, the turn signal switch drops into left turn over big bumps, steering stops, and I was going to lower the panhard mount to get the geometry just right, but nothing that kept it from going down the road beautifully. I had been asking a lot more for it, but have figured a $3500 allowance for dealing with the trans. It was rebuilt once a couple years ago, because of a synchro that wasn"t smooth, but it now sounds like there"s a bearing going out. It took a light bump in the right rear corner recently, but should be a minor project to repair.
Be advised, that Ramblers are not made any more. Parts are available NOS through a few vendors, but this is not an amateur or entry-level car. Mechanical knowledge and experience are advised, or at least the understanding that you"ll need a specialist to do the work for you. Once this car goes, I will not be on call tech support. It"ll be YOUR car. This car was driven. It was reliable as hell for 3+ years. I hauled my kids in car seats, and commuted to work 1/2 hr each way. I added shoulder belts in the front and lap belts in the rear. One rear belt was damaged and needs replacement.
This will be a full disclosure sale. Anything I know about this car will be passed on to the seller as I"m not in the habit of concealing info and buying cars back. Thanks, Todd
