Vehicle description

1964 Mercedes-Benz 230SL Roadster RARE - FACTORY 5-SPEED MANUAL Listed on behalf of the owner. Located in PORTLAND, OREGON .
Purchased new from the factory in 1964 by a German couple in Stuttgart. Fitted with factory 5-speed manual transmission. We are told that only 111 cars were so equipped. After 20 years, with the equivalent of about 100,000 miles on the odometer, the car was returned to Mercedes in Stuttgart in 1984 for a full engine rebuild, new leather upholstery, carpets, soft top, and repaint in correct Light Ruby Red color (Code 519G.) The original wheels were also updated to current (at the time) SL alloy rims.
Shortly after completion of the restoration, the owners immigrated to Oregon and then divorced. The car was offered for sale and purchased by the current owner in 1985. He had the car fitted with Zenith wire wheels and over the next 35 years enjoyed it as a part of his collection of classic cars as a fair-weather driver before passing it to his daughter. She does not drive it, which is the only reason it is now being offered for sale. Note that being a Euro model, the speedometer/odometer reads in kilometers. Reset at time of rebuild/restoration in 1984. Currently 48,477 km (30,122 miles) showing on the odometer.
Today, the restoration done by Mercedes 36 years ago still shows well. Always garaged, the paint is beautiful with a deep shine. Excellent panel alignment. No signs of rust or damage. Excellent chrome and trim. The black leather seats are very good. No tears or splits. Light Tan carpet in good condition (was not cleaned for the photos.) Wood dash trim is in good original condition. Soft top in good condition. No tears. Stored most of its life in the top well. Hardtop is in excellent condition. Original good headliner. Zenith wire wheels are in excellent condition, wrapped by newer Firestone Infinity radial tires. Rare, original working Bosch alarm system with key lock switch in the left front fender was installed by Mercedes at the factory.
The rebuilt inline 6 cylinder engine runs well. Factory 5-speed manual transmission shifts well. Brakes stop smooth and straight. Recent fully rebuilt cooling system (radiator, hoses and water pump) plus other mechanical work totaling $4,200+. All gauges work. All lights work. Modern stereo was installed. Original Becker radio is included in the trunk, along with the set of 4 Mercedes alloy wheels, car cover, jack and original first aid kit. Also included are documents and receipts verifying the history of the car.
PLEASE SEE PHOTOS AND VIDEO OF THE ENGINE RUNNING .
Overall, this is a highly desirable 230SL with a great history. A reserve has been placed on this car in keeping with its rarity and condition. Please bid accordingly.
WE WILL HAPPILY SELL TO BIDDERS WORLDWIDE AND CAN ASSIST WITH SHIPPING ANYWHERE.
