Barn Find! 1964 Lincoln Continental Hardtop
Rescued and ready for your imagination. Struck up a conversation with my retired neighbor about vintage and classic cars. He told me about a Continental he"s had parked in his barn for 25 years. My neighbor shared the vehicles history which I found really unique. It was built for an army officer stationed in Germany so the vehicle instruments are factory installed with Kilometers for the Speedometer and Odometer. Eventually the army officer was reassigned to Fort Lewis so the vehicle returned from Europe with him. Nice that the Army pays for the moving costs of soldiers, most private citizens would be unable to afford that freight. After that I began the task of inspecting the vehicle. The vehicle is incredibly straight and everything was there and original, including a complete additional set of all four doors (no door panels but the glass is good in 3 of them) and an extra front grill. All the chrome is there and its all super straight. All of the glass is perfect. The interior is not completely perfect. Sun fades on the seats and armrests in spots. A few minor tears in the front driver seat. The dash has no cracks of any kind and the instrument panel looks factory fresh. There are the few typical rust spots. The trunk deck lid on the passengers side has a rust hole with bubbling in the surrounding area. Above the rear wheel wells bubbling spots and a few along the bottom on some of the doors(don"t forget included in this sale are the 4 extra doors) I replaced a tire that couldn"t hold air to make moving the vehicle around easier. All the tires will need to be replaced to be completely road safe. Once cleaned my next task was to get the vehicle running, which I did. I knew the 430ci engine was still healthy after examining all the fluids and the ease at which I was able to turn the engine over on the front fan with a small ratchet. The original carburetor while intact has sustained corrosion from the length of time parked. I removed the carburetor and inspected the intake ports which looked great and rust free. I then ordered a period correct rebuilt Carter four barrel replacement carburetor w/ warranty. While waiting for the carb, I installed a new distributor cap, rotor, points, plugs, plug wires, new oil, ground cables and battery cables. With the new parts and the rebuilt carb mounted I then provided a secondary fuel source and battery. It fired up on the second try. That was pretty thrilling moment! Next I removed the fuel tank and had it professional cleaned and relined. I also cleaned the fuel sending unit and replaced the filter . Now the vehicle starts right up and smoothly shifts into reverse and drive for short rides in the driveway. The reason the vehicle can slow down is because one of the drum brakes still grabs just a tad so it you wont have to pull a Fred Flintstone while moving it around under its own power. Next step is the brakes and that is where I am pumping the brakes on this project. It is at this point in the road where the restorer decides whether to stay original or go the restomod route. Why waste my time to replacing or refurbish all the existing drum brakes when a potential buyer wants disc brakes. Why restore the original master cylinder when the buyer most likely want to go the dual master cylinder route. Why put nice wheels and tires on the vehicle when the buyer will likely want to pick them out for themselves. I do have all the hubcaps and all are in great condition. Why restore the interior with the factory baby blue when you want to rat rod the car or go all black. I am incredibly proud of the work done so far. I still have all the original parts including carburetor included in this sale (plus the 4 extra doors and half front grill. The vehicle will need to be towed. Free delivery if located in Snohomish county. Please email me with any questions.
