Vehicle description
About this vehicle This 1963 Triumph Spitfire Mk I is an original with updates to the exterior, interior and drivetrain. The owner has had it for 1 year. The vehicle runs great and is mainly used for weekend drives. Seller"s Notes None Vehicle Details Hello! Up for auction is a Well Preserved and Great Running 1963 Triumph Spitfire 4, Mk 1. As indicated in the initial description this Spitfire has 133,951 miles at present and based on all the paperwork and previous owners verification, I believe this to be true. It it's important to note from the beginning of this description that this Spitfire is a true driver's car not a restored garage Queen nor a perfect trophy-winning show car, but an honest-to-goodness well-sorted great driving LBC. ( Little British Car!) There is a great deal to list with a car that is 58 years old and one that has a substantial history behind it, so I will try to highlight in some form of detail, the best of what this Spitfire has to offer ahead for the prospective buyer. If I had to describe the overall condition of this Spitfire given that it's essentially the first year it was offered here in the United States, I would say it's in remarkably well-preserved condition. There is definitely an element of "patina" that is very charming and would be appreciated by those in the know. To begin with some of the bigger highlights, This Spitfire has a strong 1147cc motor. According to the previous owner, this engine was rebuilt; the engine was blocked decked, .030 over JahnsPistons, magnafluxed, balanced and blueprinted. The cylinder head was ported, polished and given a valve job along with new valve springs. There is also an "Eagle Cam" that produces a great exhaust note at idle. For a little Motor, it feels pretty good! The previous owner also installed an oil cooler and had the twin SU carburetors rebuilt. When I received the car there was a file folder filled with paperwork dating back to the mid 1960s, and within that paperwork I found evidence of some of the work performed described above in addition to some receipts for the items used. As for the transmission oh, the original Mark 1 Spitfire had a non synchronized 1st gear and that transmission appears to be no longer with this vehicle. The previous owner had installed a rebuilt transmission from a '75 Spitfire 1500 (I have a picture of the identification number for that transmission upon request) including a complete brand new clutch kit, clutch master and slave cylinders, and a lightened flywheel. That last modification is very noticeable as the engine revs very nicely and freely. The Spitfire drives very nicely and aside from a slight vibration that can be felt at speed coming from behind you, it has a great feel of simplicity and enjoyment to it no modern car can come close to today. It's when analog was really analog! Suspension why's there are fairly new tires, koni shocks, competition front Springs and a rear camber compensator that was installed, all again by the previous owner. As for the braking system, it does have rebuilt calipers from a mk 2 model, (I do have the original Mark 1 calipers, but they need to be rebuilt fully) steel brake lines all the way around and a new master cylinder with new wheel cylinders where applicable. One thing's for sure the previous owner did a majority of the upgrading and improving on the vehicle and did a great job in doing so! As for the exhaust system, the performance header is a 4 into 2 into 1 style with a thermal wrap material, that continues to the rear of the car through a New Bell Stainless Steel dual outlet exhaust that I added during my ownership. It sounds terrific and it looks great! I made extra sure that the exhaust pipes were even both from the body down and from the pipes outward! Nothing worse than crooked exhaust! ! As for other upgrades or improvements, this Spitfire has been converted from Positive Earth ground to Negative Earth ground, so as to allow my installation of a period correct Audiovox AM/ FM radio. It also allows the future owner to install a charge port for their phone or other features that a negative Earth car can allow! All the accessories function as they should. I replace the original heater control valve and heater control cable as they were well-worn and non-functional. I also sourced a good used wiper washer squirter and that is now working as it should. I replaced both cubby boxes on the driver's and passenger side as The Originals were worn to the point of falling off. These upgrades alone improve the interior and its functionality tremendously. I also replace the steering wheel with a smaller diameter (14") oem restored Triumph Sports steering wheel. This was a personal cosmetic upgrade as I did not care for the 15in two spoke wheel that was in the car when I received it. I still have that original wheel and it will be included with all the other parts that are original and go with the car. The door glass is good, the door cards are in good shape, the seats, again installed by the previous owner because the originals were completely destroyed and worn out, are from a GT6 Spitfire. The carpets are relatively new and insulated and overall the interior is a nice place to be. I recently ordered a 2oz bottle of signal red touch-up paint that I am still waiting on delivery of. The new owner will receive that when I get it. I'm a stickler for details! I have an original white tonneau cover and a black convertible top along with the " you put it together " convertible top bow assembly. ( see trunk picture where it is stored when not in use) In addition to the tonneau cover and the convertible top, I also have an original Mark 1/ Mark 2 style hardtop for this Spitfire. I don't believe its original to the car. It will need restoration to be fully used and enjoyed. Currently the hardtop has a lexan plastic rear window and I do have the actual Rear Window Glass (!) For this hardtop which is extremely rare to find. I have several original parts that are included with the sale of the Spitfire. .they are a follows: original steel rims, 5 original hubcaps. I have the Mk 1 front bumper, the mounting brackets and all the hardware to install it. The Mk1 Front grilles ( currently the car has a Polished Mk 2 Aluminum grille in it along with Mk3 bumperettes up front to give it that "LeMans" theme but all of it is reversible and can be made to look original very quickly. As mentioned before, I have the original 2 spoke steering wheel, a "Spare" useable, 4.10 rear differential, a performance 4 into 1 header, and and inclusive box of spares (points, condesers, oil filter, spare lenses and bezels, etc.) All of which are for the new owner. In coming to conclusion, I had ordered a British Motor Heritage Certificate for this Spitfire. Due to slow mail these days , the delay in receiving this document from the U.K., has been extremely long in the wait. When I do receive it, I will mail it to the new owner. It is a great document to have for a car of this vintage. I also have an original Spitfire 4 , Mk1owners manual along with the file folder full of paperwork spanning the 58 years of Spitfires life, and a three-ring binder of original Triumph Spitfire factory manual material. My main goal with the description of all this information it's to send this car to a good home and to somebody who will appreciate the inclusiveness and attention to detail. If it's perfect you're looking for then this is not the car for you but if you want a car that has a good history is very presentable for car shows I'm back road driving that is well sorted and functional oh, then you will love this Spitfire. The round tail Spitfires have quite the following and are certainly on the radar of collectors these days. Don't miss your chance. I have included a "Buy It Now" price should someone not want to go through the auction process. I have also set a reasonable Reserve for this 7 day auction. I recently moved to Illinois in February and never had a chance to register the car in Connecticut while I was working on it. Current life situations warrant the sale of the vehicle, therefore, this Spitfire, will be sold on a Connecticut Bill of Sale with the new owners name and info on it and a copy of the last Connecticut registration for it. I do have documentation from the state of Connecticut that states: that's all you need to sell it to any state outside of Connecticut. I can provide you with a picture of that letter upon request. The process is very straightforward. Winner of the auction must deposit a non-refundable amount of $1,000 within 48 hours unless otherwise discussed with me. No exceptions! Winner is also responsible for the shipping arrangements and costs thereof. I encourage you to ask any and all questions you may have regarding the Spitfire. I can provide some additional pictures upon request. This 1963 Triumph Spitfire4 Mk1 is being sold in "As Is" condition, with No warranties or guarantees implied. I encourage you to bid with confidence or use the Buy It Now feature. I have an EXCELLENT rating both as a seller and a buyer. My communication is top-notch and I will do what I can to make it a smooth transaction for everybody! As stated before, my goal is to send this car to someone who will appreciate it and use it happily. Two zero three 2 three 1 six six 3 seven. Please nothing after 9 p.m. CST. Thanks and Good Luck! !
