Best known for birthing Pontiac"s legendary GTO, the LeMans has proven an excellent platform for building impressive, neck-snapping performers. But big power isn"t everything. And in the world of collector cars, most folks want the whole package, as in: more power, more style AND more fun. The product of a professional, ground-up restoration, this Poncho backs 400 cubic inches of Pontiac V8 with an upgraded suspension, a tough Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed and all the glory of an open-air driving experience. And if you"re a discerning enthusiast who"s looking for old school fun wrapped in head-turning style, it"s just the “more” you"re looking for! First impressions are important, and this striking drop-top certainly makes a strong one. For starters, Pontiac did a great job whittling their brand-defining Wide Track aesthetic into an appealing compact profile that directly supported the marque"s performance and practicality. Naturally, that profile was fully reworked during this car"s ground-up restoration. Once those surfaces were prepped and carefully aligned, House Of Kolor Tangerine Kandy 2-stage was dashed in Hot Rod Black and detailed with Charcoal outlining stripes. And today, this sweet Y-Body can be summed up as audacious, intense and flat out wicked! Given the popularity of The Judge and recent offerings like the WS6 Trans Am and Holden-sourced GTO, orange seems like a go-to color for any hot Pontiac. And since the division did such a great job of creating low-key details that don"t weigh down the car"s simple design, this LeMans"s flashy appearance feels perfectly natural. At the front of the car, amber parking lamps light a mirrored bumper, which frames one of the first applications of the brand"s iconic split grille. That fully re-chromed grille, balancing halogen headlights opposite traditional Pontiac and 421 badges, points to a convex hood that"s finished with an open scoop. Behind that stainless-trimmed scoop, a classy factory mirror reflects stainless-trimmed glass that"s cleared by polished wipers and capped in black canvas. Opposite that canvas, a tidy hull founds factory door handles between monochromatic arrowheads, tasteful “LeMans” emblems and bright rocker spears. And at the back of the car, subtle fins lead the eye into a stainless-trimmed valance, which balances bright taillights and a third “LeMans” script between a second mirrored bumper, more 421 badging and small reverse lamps. Pop the hood and you"ll find a fully rebuilt Pontiac 400 that"s ready for miles of muscled motoring. At the top of that Tangerine Kandy mill, louvered air cleaners funnel fresh wind in to dual FAST throttle bodies, which ride an Offenhauser intake. That air/fuel mixture floods iron heads, which seat finned valve covers under polished breathers. At the back of those heads, a hot points distributor sequences fire between a chrome coil and quality MSD Street Fire Wires. Cast exhaust manifolds make quick work of spent gases. In front of those tubes, fresh V-belts spin an Edelbrock water pump beside a rebuilt alternator. Cooling comes courtesy of a traditional radiator, which features a laboriously polished top-half. And items like stainless fuel lines, a fresh brake booster and a spry CVR mini-starter mix great looks with great performance! Crawl under this Y-Body and you"ll find a freshly rebuilt chassis that"s characterized by a great stance. The car"s drivability is greatly enhanced by a smooth Turbo-Hydramatic 350 3-speed, which twists a familiar 10-bolt axle. That axle pushes a reimagined rear-clip, which frames tubular control arms with a beefy sway bar. Opposite that clip, a modified front-half hangs modern rack-and-pinion steering behind a second beefy sway bar. Stops are provided by four power-assisted calipers, which squeeze aggressive race pads around drilled and slotted rotors. Exhaust rolls through rowdy FLO-PRO mufflers. And momentum comes courtesy of tough Hurst wheels, which wear 255/45ZR17 BF Goodrich g-Force Sports. Open the doors and a crisp vinyl interior remains just the way the factory planned it. The first thing you"ll notice is a duo of thick bench seats, split in the front, that seem like a great place to grab some wind-infused sun. True to Pontiac fashion, a tasteful dash frames stylish Auto Meter telemetry in an engine-turned instrument panel. Beneath that dash, fresh carpet anchors a long Lokar shifter between LeMans-themed floor mats. In front of the driver, a factory steering wheel laps a standard column. And behind the passengers, a matted trunk hides an Optima yellow-top battery. SUMMARY
