Talk about full-sized! There is nothing small about this top-of-the-line 1960 Pontiac Bonneville Vista Hardtop. At nearly 18.5 feet in length and weighing more than two tons, this car shows how GM rolled during that era. But beyond these imposing figures is a gorgeous sedan that is rarely seen these days. It has such a classy look, with sculpted curves replacing the garish angles of the late 50’s. It also has a fantastic roofline from the curved A-pillars to the enormous back window. And then there is the three-tone interior and that pillow-soft ride. There is a lot to talk about here.
This Bonneville shows 48,500 miles and was part of a collection in central Wisconsin. It has been repainted in its original colors of Palomino Beige (body) and Mahogany (top) which are perfect for this body style. The underside is in good shape overall but does have some rust areas, notably behind the rear wheels and under the driver seat. All four doors open and close smoothly with excellent gaps. Note this body does not have a pillar between the doors which makes things feel even more spacious with the windows down. All trim and chrome is present and in very good condition. There are also wide whitewall tires which are a must-have for this type of automobile.
The drivetrain consists of the factory 389 cubic inch 4v engine, Hydra-Matic 4-speed automatic transmission, and 9.3” Hotchkiss style rear end. You also get power steering and power brakes, both of which work great and are necessities on a car of this size. Recent maintenance includes new lower ball joints and all four wheel cylinders.
The three-tone Morrokide interior is one of Pontiac’s defining features and is an excellent match with the exterior in this case (they sometimes got a little creative with interior colors). This one is in amazing original condition. There is plenty of room for everyone with front and rear bench seats, while the dash is clean and uncluttered with an attractive walnut insert and passenger grab handle. All gauges and lighting features work properly as do the horn, wipers, radio, and heater/defroster. Same with the remote mirror. And just take a look at that enormous trunk, complete with an original spare tire and bumper jack.
The Bonneville has always been Pontiac’s flagship, and cars like this one show why. It offers a very comfortable ride in a package that can’t be missed. And while you can’t go to a car show without seeing a GTO or Trans Am, this model is much harder to find. Just make sure you measure your garage first.
