Vehicle description

I"ll start off by saying. . this truck is wearing its original red & white paint with authentic 62 year old patina. It has never been wrecked, restored or re-finished. It"s the "Custom-Cab" with rare wrap-around, big-back-window (instead of the more common small, flat rectangular rear-glass). No blind-spots when you look over the shoulder to merge lanes. It has deluxe trim such as chrome horn ring on the steering-wheel, chrome grill (not painted body-color like on most models), chrome emblems, stainless-steel window-mouldings, a little extra trim on the interior, etc. It"s a manual 3-speed on the tree transmission, with what Ford called the "Mileage-Maker" 230 cubic inch 6-cylinder. No radio or antenna, but it has other neat features.
It was fancy for its day. . still pretty basic by today"s standards. No power-steering or power-brakes (those weren"t options on most pickups back then). It does have the long-lived, and indestructible Ford 9-inch rear-axle, so if a person wished to install a Coyote motor, or (God forbid) a Chevy LS-swap , it would definitely hold up to the added torque of a modern drivetrain. Even this inline-6 is really no slug. With 139 horsepower, it gets up and goes decently! The axle is the optional 3:70 gear-ratio, so the engine isn"t screaming at excessive RPMs going down the highway. The wide-whitewall tires are bumpy, old bias-plys with plenty of weather-checking, but they have new inner-tubes in them, so never leak air-pressure. They"re totally fine for around town & to go to car-shows, but I wouldn"t go 80mph down the interstate on them or anything crazy. They do fine at 60mph.
No air-conditioning. It has wing-vent windows & floor-vents which make things decently comfortable on a hot Summer drive. The heater and fan-blower work. I don"t know what I"m failing to see here, but can"t find any way to activate the windshield-wipers. I bought new fitted-upholstery for the seat and door-panels in the original red vinyl-color, as well as installed a re-production moulded-rubber floor-covering in the cab. It"s got a brand new carburetor, so it has an automatic choke now, and starts up well. I was able to retro-fit it to accept the original oil-bath air-cleaner. 96,625 miles on the odometer and counting (I"ve still been driving it around, but will park the vehicle once it gets a bid, or someone agrees to purchase it). The engine runs great with no valve-ticks, knocks or blue-smoke out the tailpipe (it doesn"t burn oil, or leave any fluid-drips on my driveway). I just changed the oil and filter, as well as put new antifreeze in the cooling-system. The brake fluid is all flushed out and freshly filled as well.
I replaced the old generator with a brand new modern one-wire alternator for reliability. The truck also has newer spark-plugs, plug-wires, distributor cap & rotor, a new fuel-pump, new water-pump, new fuel-filter, brand new Champion brand 3-core aluminum radiator (again for reliability, and the engine stays nice & cool), new fan-belt and hoses replaced, brand new brake master-cylinder and slave-cylinders at all 4 corners, new brake-shoes, new brake-hoses and lines. New fuel-lines and hoses. There"s no slop or play in the wheel-bearings, knuckles or king-pins. The tie-rod ends are new, and I just did an alignment on it. I also just set all the rocker-arms for valve-tappet-clearance on the engine, so it"s all tuned up and ready to roll.
The clutch is good with no slippage. Transmission shifts through the gears smoothly (no synchro in 1st gear as they were just manufactured that way). The previous owner was 96 years old, and recently passed away, but he owned the truck for most of its existence before I got it (I wish he could take it for a ride now that it"s got a new lease on life mechanically). Some of the glass has some minor milking; no chips or cracks. You kinda have to slam the doors, and they open hard. I installed a new muffler & replaced most of the exhaust system. The manifold might have cracks, as it"s got the typical 6-cylinder "farty" exhaust sound, but there"s no smell of fumes in the cab when driving down the road. The headlights, brake lights, and taillights all work. Turn-signals are not currently working (I just use hand-signals out the driver"s window with my arm for now). . that could be a flasher-relay or something simple. I just haven"t gotten around to looking into it. The gas-tank is in great shape with no pinholes or rust. I had it steam-cleaned/boiled out & pressure-tested at a shop recently. It needs a new fuel sending-unit float in order for the gauge to work on the dash. Otherwise all the other instruments including oil-pressure, temp-gauge, speedometer, and battery light work as they should.
Something worth mentioning is that some of the rear suspension spring leaves are broken. Not knowing the intentions of the next owner (whether wanting to lower/slam the truck, or lift it up & turn it into a 4x4). . I just left them as they are. The vehicle is completely drivable, though. . I just wouldn"t recommend hauling a huge, heavy load in the bed until they were replaced with new ones. There are dents/dings throughout the body, as it was used for its intended purpose. . a pickup truck. The frame is very solid. There are rust holes in the lower tailgate, pin-holes in the box-floor (I installed a bed-mat to make it neat), bed-corners, cab-corners, door-bottoms and inner-fenders. Many "restored" vehicles are chalked-full of plastic body-filler, hiding a multitude of these things. With exceptions of the driver"s running-board, and lower fenders (which I welded in new patch-panels for). . this truck"s wearing all of its original rust. . so what you see is exactly what you"re getting. There shouldn"t be reason for surprises if you"ve read my description and view at all the pictures. This would be a great candidate for restoration, however it seems a shame not to just leave it original in my eyes. I ran a buffer over the whole body when I first got the truck to clean up the staining on the paint a bit, but didn"t put any type of wax, silicone or clear-coat on it, so the next owner can preserve the patina however they so-choose. These old vehicles are only factory once, and this truck has real character (while still looking classy, and not just like some tasteless fake-patina rat-rod heap-o-junk). It gets lots of attention just the way it is. You just don"t see unrestored originals like this much anymore, which to me is what"s so neat about the vehicle.
I"ve got a good, clear title for it, registered in my name. Other than the questionable old tires and windshield wipers not functioning, I wouldn"t hesitate to hop in this thing and drive it anywhere at a moment"s notice (just use Rain-X on the glass if you"re adventurous). Mechanically, it"s very sound, reliable, and road-worthy, though. Just a good ole" truck that deserves to be driven and enjoyed!
Naturally, this vehicle is being sold As Is with no warranty. I can store it for a reasonable amount of time if need be (for pick-up arrangements), but require a $500 security-deposit within 24 hours of listing"s end, and for the remainder of the purchase-price to be paid for in full within 10 days. Deposits are considered non-refundable, but I welcome anyone to come take a ride in it, or have inspected before the auction"s close. If having it shipped, I do have a couple of phone numbers for auto-transporters I"ve used over the years which I can pass along. I can certainly provide pictures of front & back sides of the title prior to payment, and will type up a bill-of-sale for the buyer.
The pictures depict smaller front tires mounted, and some with and without the bed-mat. They were all taken recently. The smaller front tires are in place currently, and the bed-mat is installed/included. I just wanted to show honestly the condition of the metal underneath.
