Vehicle description

1958 Packard 58L The Packard Motor Company first opened its doors in 1899 and was founded by James and William Packard along with partner George Lewis Weiss. They were a prestigious, distinctive automobile brand that stood for quality and pride of ownership for the elite class. They built many wonderful and iconic cars through the years including many of the best cars before and after the great world wars. Packard survived many economic changes that faced the world for many years. However in the mid 1950"s many long established brands were fighting a losing battle to survive a price war between the big 3. In effort to stay relevant and survive, a healthy company named Packard merged with the large and diverse offerings of Studebaker, becoming the Studebaker-Packard Corporation. October 1 1954 Packard bought Studebaker and by the 1957 and 1958 model years the cars were known to some as the "Packardbaker" The 1958 Packards came with no model names and were no longer built in Detroit Michigan but rather in Southbend, Indiana. The 58L was introduced in early 1958 and built its last in July of that year. Very low production numbers in this time frame with the 58L 2 door coupe being only a mere 675 units. The 1958 Packards were amongst the first in the industry to be face lifted with plastic and fibreglass parts. Pieces were literally grafted on Studebaker bodies and were appointed with a more luxurious interior than the Studebaker brand name. That was the last of the Packard name forever 1899-1958. Not since the 1930"s had so many automobile brands disappeared.
This 58L is a fine example of the only 675 ever built. It has only 76000 original miles and shows well. The paint appears to be 15-20 years old and still shines up great. The trim and bright work is in exceptional condition. The front and rear bumpers are in original condition and do have some bruises on them. The interior shows well and is all original with the exception of new carpet this year (the drivers armrest shows some wear). The body and floors on the car are very solid and have been preserved to hold up well over the years. This Packard has the overhead valve 289 V8 and has dual exhaust, mated with the 2 speed Flight-o-matic transmission. It drives great and catches so much attention. The enthusiasts who know these cars exist can hardly believe they are seeing one in person. It is a joy to own a great piece of history in the automotive world, and now its your opportunity to take that on with this beautiful Packard.
