Vehicle description
1957 Mercury Monterey Mermaid Recreated Concept Car
A rare opportunity to own a unique one-of-a-kind car! This is a tribute car to the 1957 Mercury Monterey “Mermaid”.
The original “Mermaid Merc” was built by Bill Stroppe and was featured on the cover of Hot Rod Magazine (July 1957). At the 1957 Daytona Speed Trials, as a factory experiment, the Mercury Mermaid was built to go as fast as possible and look great while doing so.
Starting out as a 1957 Mercury Monterey, the original Mermaid featured a giant aluminum tailfin just behind the driver seat. The car’s interior and windshield were removed to cut down on weight. And an almost completely flat aluminum canopy that encloses a single driver’s side cockpit was built to cut down on drag. Power came from a highly modified Hilborn-injected bored-out 387 cubic inch Lincoln engine that reportedly produced slightly over 400 HP.
At Daytona, the car achieved an official speed of 159 mph until it blew a radiator hose, but the car supposedly reached speeds of around 180 mph. And that was back in 1957!
Instead of ending up in a museum, the original Mermaid was parted out, the engine was transplanted into another hot rod, and the body was likely scrapped. The car has since been faithfully recreated by Royce Brechler in 2000.
This car runs and sounds great! Now is your chance to own an interesting one-of-a-kind car!
