Vehicle Details 1957 Ford Fairlane Retractable This car was acquired back in 2004 by a very dear friend of mine that spent the next three years completely restoring it from the frame up. The car was completed in 2007 and began to enter car shows immediately. The car was mostly disassembled when it was acquired. I personally watched him restore this car myself with multiple weekly visits while he was doing the work, he was an extremely talented person and he did a wonderful job on the restoration. I can guide you through each aspect of the car with a description of how I knew it and how I currently know it. Exterior The body and frame were taken completely down to bare metal. Any questionable areas were replaced with sheet-metal from a donor car. There is no Bondo on this car. It was refinished and single stage colonial white and robin egg blue, the original colors of the car. The stainless steel trim was polished and straightened as much as possible and mostly original. There are some flaws in the trim and the paint but nothing significant. The retractable top works perfectly. The bumpers were re-chromed. Everything was buffed, polished and as many original parts as possible reused. On a scale of 1 to 10 I would rate the exterior a solid 8.5 Interior The seats were reupholstered with what was supposed to be the last of the original style fabric. Everything functions as it should and the windows roll up and down nice and smooth. The carpet has a bit of sun fading and some of the chrome bits on the dash have some minor pitting because it’s original parts. There is a concealed aftermarket stereo system they can easily be removed and aftermarket gauges which most people put on these cars it seems anyway. I would rate the interior a solid 8 out of 10. Mechanical The engine was rebuilt and so was the transmission. The odometer was reset to zero and now reads 12,432 miles since the restoration. It was driven very regularly until the original owner fell ill a few years ago. It still starts up and runs and drives good but it has not been registered for at least a year. The tires are in great condition considering they’ve been on the car since 2007, the brakes work well. This car rides like a land yacht and will cruise all day long. I believe the engine is a 312 y-block and it has an automatic transmission and it has true dual exhaust! Mechanically I would rate the car a 9 out of 10 This is truly a wonderful car that was restored by a private owner with a personal passion for cars. He was also an extremely close friend of mine for about 30 years. He passed away in 2018 and his widow has this made the difficult decision to sell this car. I think it’s great how he stayed true to the originality and the vibe of the 50s. It will certainly make a great cruiser and show-winner for the next owner.
