Looking like something Elvis Presley might have owned and driven, this 1957 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible oozes late 1950s excess and glamor and it has had a fantastic frame off nut and bolt restoration and everything was restored to top notch quality!
Correctly presented in stunning Black paint (code 10), this convertible’s paint and trim are in overall excellent condition, the body is razor straight, the engine bay is extremely tidy, the reproduction version of the original battery looks good, the trunk is clean and includes a full-sized spare chrome Sabre wheel and tire, wheel. The bright chrome bumpers fit to the body tightly and up front is the famous Dagmar bumper, named for American former actress, model and TV personality.
This big black Cadillac rolls on a excellent set of chrome Sabre wheels wrapped with BFGoodrich Silvertown radials, size 235/70R15. All tires and wheels covers are in good order. This Cadillac has a 129.5-inch wheelbase.
Under the hood is original 365 CID V-8 engine, a bored and stroked version of the original 331 CID V-8 launched in 1949, breathing through dual exhausts. The engine was completely rebuilt and blueprinted during restoration and was bored .030. This example has an electric cooling fan, which replaced the original, engine-driven fan. This motor is mated to a four-speed Hydramatic automatic transmission. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, Autronic Eye, EZ Glass, power steering, Hydrovac power brakes, power windows, power antenna, power front seats and the front brakes have been converted to disc brakes. The car has the optional front passenger vanity mirror, dual rear cigarette lighters and front and rear radio speakers.
Inside, the car’s black and white leather and fabric interior (code 20), is in overall excellent and restored order. The black and white leather front and rear bench seats with fold-down center armrest in front. The black carpet is in similar shape. The restored white, two-spoke steering wheel offers good contrast, as does the white trim on the metal dashboard. The black inner door panels also offer white trim and look great. A column-mounted shifter and a restored factory AM radio round out the interior.
The rebuilt power top is StayFast material and in overall excellent shape but there is a slight tear at the bottom on the drivers side.
For 1957, a tubular X-frame without side rails was adopted, which Cadillac claimed resulted in lower body without a loss of usable space and increased torsional strength. These frames gained controversy as being unsafe, and other manufactures, such as Ford, touted that their “perimeter” frames were safer. Front end styling was marked by rubber bumper guard tips and dual circular lamps set into the lower bumper section. Side trim was revised and a dual taillight theme was used. Identifying the standard 62 models were bright metal moldings, just forward of the rear wheel openings, highlighted by seven horizontal wind slits. At the upper end this fender brake trim joined a horizontal molding that ran along a conical flare extending towards both taillamps. A crest medallion was seen on the forward angled rear fins. DeVilles had special nameplates on the front fenders. Series 62 Eldorados (as distinct from the Series 70 Eldorado Brougham) were further distinguished by the model name above a V-shaped rear deck ornament and on the front fenders. The rear fender and deck contour was trimmed with broad, sculptured stainless steel beauty panels. Also seen were “shark” style fins pointing towards the back of the cars. A three-section built in front bumper was another exclusive trait of the Series 62 Eldorados, which came with a long list of standard features.
Convertible competition to this Cadillac in 1957 included Buick’s Series 70 Roadmaster, Chrysler’s New Yorker, DeSoto’s Fireflite, Dodge’s Royal Lancer, Lincoln’s Mark II and Premiere, Mercury’s Montclair and Oldsmobile’s Starfire 98.
This Cadillac was the AACA First Place Grand National Winner in 2009 and was judged by the Cadillac-LaSalle Club in June 2009 at 97.67 points.
This Cadillac droptop simply drips class, prestige and pomp, even while parked. If you’re a collector, if you’re a Cadillac fan or if you’re simply interested in owning a fine, late 1950s convertible, this is one to covet. Stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check it out for yourself!
