Classic 1950 Willys Jeepster., is a stand out on our lot, Red exterior, White Interior, 4 cylinder. Manual transmission on the column,
In 1950 Willys (pronounced Will-iss) Jeepster introduced a new instrument panel along with a redesigned front end that featured a V-shaped grill with horizontal chrome trim. Shortly after WWII Willys-Overland wanted to capitalize on American’s desire for new, inexpensive passenger vehicles. Willys was able to make good use of a modern production facility, upgraded for the war effort located in Toledo, that plant had the ability to produce goods faster than ever before. New found popularity poised the Jeepster for Stardom.
Charles “Cast-Iron Charlie” Sorensen had a small problem, no auto-body manufacturer was willing to take on the Jeepster project. “Cast-Iron Charlie” was a solution guy, and he found a manufacturer that produced sheet-metal panels for the appliance industry. Without proper machinery to stamp anything complicated-Like curved fenders-the Jeepster’s design would be limited. Brook Stevens arrived on the scene, a talented young designer imagined a sporty two-door “car.” To offset the Jeepster’s limited curves, Stevens envisioned a bold, two-toned paint job—“a yellow and black color scheme that just screamed at you for attention.”
In December 1947, James Mooney, former GM exec, became president and chairman of the board. Mooney declared Jeepster “a dashing four-cylinder sports phaeton which has captured much of the elusive quality of Continental models. Willys shut down Jeepster production before the end of the year, and 1950 leftovers were sold as ’51 models.
The Jeepster’s “four-year” production total was 19,131, and we have one right here in California.
