Description: Body: The build began from an original, mostly rust free 1950 Business Coupe body. The car was stripped and minor spot rust repair was completed to the floor pan and A-pillars. Rocker panels appeared rust free but were replaced while the car was apart simply due to 1949-1951 Ford rocker panel reputations. The original color of Sheridan Blue was darkened slightly and the car was completely refinished in this hue. The original paint under the hood with factory grease markings was preserved. Original front and rear bumpers were retained and not re-plated.
Chassis & Driveline : The chassis was refinished and the under body was painted red oxide color to mimic factory appearance of 1950 Fords. An 8” Maverick rear end (non-limited slip) with a 3.00:1 gear ratio was used. The suspension is slightly lowered in the front and the stance is completed with Shoebox Central heavy duty front and rear swaybars. Business Coupes received 16 inch wheels, and this one has Coker 6.00R16 Blackwall radials, giving it a period correct bias-ply look with the smoother ride of a radial tire. The spare is a Firestone 6.00x16 and its wheel may retain factory finish.
Engine & Transmission: Rebuilt Ford Flathead now displacing 275 cubic inches, with a Mercury crankshaft and aluminum flywheel. Built by legendary southwest Virginia engine builder Charlie Oberfelt and Terry Walters Precision Engines in Roanoke, Virginia. A Roadrunner Engineering Supercharger system with a Weiand blower and Edelbrock aluminum cylinder heads was installed. The engine produced 262 horsepower with 305 ft/lbs of torque at 4720 RPM on the dynometer. The dyno run may be viewed via this link: https:/ www.bing.com/videos/search?q=terry+walters+flathead+dyno+test&docid=608030154105160443&mid=88890BE72C0FFE7B758888890BE72C0FFE7B7588&view=detail&FORM=VIRE (mis-labled as 1949 Flathead; this is in fact the engine that is in this car) The electrical system was upgraded to 12 volts, MSD electronic ignition was installed, along with an electric fuel pump and the battery relocated to the trunk. Fully synchroed Tremec T-5 5 speed transmission rebuilt by Bass Transmission in Vinton, Virginia, with a Hurst Shifter installed.
Interior: As much of the original interior was retained as possible. Original cardboard interior panels, dash paint, and metal trim pieces. The headliner and floormat are new, correct, replacements. The seat was re-upholstered by Maynard Horn, and the original floor mat has been retained under the new one on the rear platform area. Shifter position is natural and comfortable. The spot light is functional.
Condition: Built by our client to be a traditional-style custom, moonshine tribute, and as a “sleeper” with a non-traditional powerplant. Much of the finish work was completed by King"s Restorations in Roanoke, Virginia. A nice combination of creativity, originality, and selective restoration, the car starts easily and runs smoothly. The aluminum flywheel has some mild flutter on cold take off, typical of aluminum flywheels. The shifter is comfortably located and operates as smooth as one would expect a T-5 to do. The car rides smooth, and with the suspension upgrades, corners well. The torque of the blown flathead is readily available. The car is well sorted, a pleasure to drive and ready to go.
