Vehicle description
Up for Auction is a one-family 1950 Chrysler Royal. The car was purchased brand new in 1950 in San Diego by my grandfather. My father inherited it from my grandfather. Now it has been handed down to me, but I do not have the space for it.
1950 was a banner year for Chrysler when production reached 167,316 units, the highest production since 1928. The four-door Royal sedan was the biggest seller in the line, with 17,713 units sold. The Chrysler Royal was fitted with 250cid six cylinder flathead engine paired with a fluid drive transmission.
This is an older restoration, but is complete. It has a beautiful upholstery job on the seats and door panels and headliner. Carpeting is worn because it was replaced much earlier.
The car has lived its entire life in San Diego and is essentially rust-free except the pop up vent lid between the hood and the windshield. I have no idea why this particular part rusted when the rest of the vehicle shows no signs of rust whatsoever. It could be easily repaired or replaced (SEE PHOTO).
The glass is perfect and all windows function as they should. The body is solid and the doors shut like vault doors. The body does have some slight damage at the left rear bumper area where someone backed into it ( SEE PHOTO). There is another small paint defect on the right rear fender and a very minor dent in the lower right front door where the door was opened into something. Otherwise the paint and chrome are in good shape, but could benefit from some polishing.
The dash cluster gauges, including the oil pressure, temp, ammeter, fuel, speedometer, and odometer work perfectly. The odometer reads 96,669 original miles and has not been tripped over. The brakes and lights are all functioning as they should. Tires are older, but have plenty of tread on them. Cosmetically, the wide whitewalls are discolored and show signs of age. The steering wheel plastic has cracked (as they all do) and is quite functional with its aftermarket steering wheel cover. There are several individuals on the internet that can recast these steering wheels and restore them to their former glory.
The Spitfire Flat Head Six Cylinder engine starts easily- it runs and idles smoothly. It has plenty of power, doesn’t smoke or use oil. For some reason, however, it tends to overheat. My guess is a good flush of the cooling system would rectify this.
The transmission is a Fluid Drive type which functions and shifts perfectly as it should. These are highly reliable transmissions and are very low maintenance.Fluid Drive was developed by Chrysler in the 40’s and is a hybrid of a manual and an early automatic. It has a clutch pedal which is used only at startup and when shifting into reverse.
Fluid Drive! It’s brilliant and very easy to use. To get rolling, you step on the clutch pedal, shift the column shifter down, and let out the clutch. At 15mph, let off the gas and it automatically shifts into the high range. Approaching a stop sign there is no need to use the clutch. Automatically it downshifts. To takeoff from a stop, no clutch or shifting needed. Hit the gas and off you go.
Overall, this is a nice (not perfect) original car that’s not going to break the bank. Happily, parts for this vehicle are readily available. My Dad used the well-known part supplier Andy Bernbaum who sells just about anything you need to keep this car on the road.
Remember, this is a 71 year old car. I’ve tried to describe the vehicle and its known faults, with the attached photographs, as best I can. If you have questions or need additional photos, please ask. I would strongly urge any buyer to have an older vehicle inspected before purchase.
