This 1949 Plymouth Suburban 2 Dr wagon is the last and the best of the 3 that I recently had. I found it in Paso Robles Ca. Sitting under a tree where it had been waiting 20 years to be rescued.
It belonged to a real nice guy named Ray. Ray, like many of us, had more projects than years left. He agreed to sell me his 3 1949 Plymouths. 2, of which, were Suburbans. The other was a green 4dr.
I included pics of the 2 I sold. Tan one and a red oxide primered one plus a slammed 1950 wagon. The slammed version was my vision for this one. I planned a completely, bone stock, wagon. Stock drive train etc except a 12volt system on air ride.
I ended up selling the other two. The other wagon had very rusty floors and the 4 dr was a twin to one I already owned. I sold the 2 4drs to a guy for yard art at his Hiway 66 themed retreat in SoCal.
I really wanted to get this one up and going but I, like Ray, have more projects than years. Ray passed away just over a year ago just after his 80th birthday. I am 64 but have 20 or 30 years of projects sitting here. Time to thin them out.
So the story that I got from Ray was that he purchased it from a family who"s dad was intent on restoring it. After looking at 20 or 30 rust buckets he found this one with very little welding required! He took it apart to have it sandblasted. He stored the parts and passed away before the sandblasting was done. Unfortunately nobody knew where the parts were stored and they had an incomplete vehicle.
The engine, trans, radiator, dash, steering column, seat frames and one spindle and possibly one tail light are missing. I think I have both tail lights but could only locate one at the time I took the pics.
I located a 1949 Plymouth Special Deluxe 4dr sedan that has virtually everything missing from the wagon except the seat frames and tail light! I took the 4dr to a mechanic who got it running and driving! It sounds great! Shifts through all 3 gears, goes backward too! It runs out of the fuel tank as he cleaned out the system. We did not tackle the brakes as this will be the donor car.
The wagon body is Very nice! Never wrecked. One rust spot about 6 inches long and an inch high on the right rear quarter in front of the rear wheel. There are some rust holes in the floor however they are more inward. Not all rotted around the edges. A bubble here and there but not a rust bucket!
The doors open and close nicely. No rust in the drip rails. No rust in the tailgates, upper, lower or the corners of the body. No rust in the usual places!
I have a set of door handles and the tailgate handle that I found for it and all of the trim. The grille is very nice.
The rear fenders are inside of the car and very straight. No rust in the spare tire well.
The art deco bumpers are decent.
There are quite a few parts on the 4dr that will not be needed for the wagon that could be sold to regain some of your cash. The left doors and front fender, trunk lid, suspension, etc. It was hit on the right side.
I do not have a title for either car. They are no longer in the DMV system. If you need a title, for export, I can get them for an extra charge { after the cars are paid for } I have a bill of sale for each one from the previous owners.
I will not sell the 4dr separately unless I sell the wagon, first. Otherwise I have to look for parts again. Sorry.
I am not looking for trades at this time. As I mentioned I already have too many projects.
I live about 3 hours North of LAX in Nipomo Ca 93444 near Pismo Beach. I have a trailer and can help move them up to 200 miles or so for $1/mile each way.
