Vehicle description
The Packard Station Sedan (Woody Wagon) was an almost all steel body, with real Birch Wood body paneling attached. The only structural wood was in the tailgate region. Wood lines the interior cargo compartment with steel strips attached to prevent scratches. The Station Sedan was only offered in the Standard Eight series. Only 3,864 of the these RARE Packards were built between 1948 and 1950. The car is mostly original with an older repaint. The car has the highly desirable R-9 overdrive and can seat 6 comfortably.
MECHANICAL: Car is equipped with the super smooth 288 CID straight 8 with a rating of 135 HP. 3 speed manual plus overdrive. The car has the Electro-matic clutch, but is missing some parts and does not work at this time. All the gauges, including clock, oil, amp, temp, fuel, and AM radio. Spot light and fog lights were popular options. The specialty tires of America 700-15 blackwalls are mounted to original steel wheels with wheel covers. The covers are original and have slight cracks. The car has been lightly used in the last couple years, but runs and drives well. The engine has been rebuilt, starts easily, idles smooth and has plenty of power. Transmission is smooth, the brakes stop the car in a straight line, but the steering is a little loose.
EXTERIOR: The exterior is very good with straight sheet metal. There are no dents or rust on the car. Sheet metal is all original and body panels line up nicely. The wood has some replacement pieces and is in good condition. The paint was done many years ago and would be considered fair to good. It has some orange peel and some dusty surfaces. There are several small chips and some fine scratches.
INTERIOR: The original vinyl is in good condition. There is one seem split on the front seat (see photo) and in general it just needs a good detail and dusting. Original door panels are dirty and show alot of use and wear. The headliner should be replaced due to stains. The wood grain on the dash and windows appears to be original and in good condition. Steering wheel is in good shape, but interior handles have some pitting. Other interior pieces such as stainless all shows typical wear.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: Was cleaned and painted, but not to show quality. There is now some minor corrosion on the engine, manifolds, and lower radiator. The undercarriage is oily and dirty with minor corrosion and some surface rust on bolts and suspension parts. The floor pans are rust free.
Overall condition is fair to good. The old car price guide from Hemmings, and prices of cars that have sold in the last few years on Barret-Jackson, Mecum, and RM auctions have given us a very fair reserve price for this car. It has been sitting for some time and needs some TLC to get back into a good quality driver and all around fun car to have for a collection or cruise night. Happy bidding, close up inspections can be arranged through the listing person. I do the listing of this car as a favor to the Foundation and am not a professional dealer. Of course we can assist a shipping company to help load.
