this car was restored many many years ago, the paint shines up but has lots of chips and wear to it, could be polished up and kept as is or repaint it, really no body work is needed, its a solid car. the floors are solid, looking underneath it is pretty solid with no frame issues, no rot on inner rockers , only a minor issue in small spots on the floor pan with was repaired with an entire floor of steel done nicely. seats were restored and still look great, newer headliner looks good, door panels still look good, carpets are decent, the dash was restored with all gauges done, steering wheel was restored, all the knows and handles were replaced, only the rear window crank handles need the new know on them. all lights work as well as yellow flood lights, spot lights are wired in but currently not working, have not looked into that. the battery has been holding a charge but its age is unknown, the car was given new plugs and points and fresh fuel and fires right up, the carburetor could use a rebuild. it does appear to have a new starter system and is 12 volt and fires right up, takes a while to warm up before it idles smoothly but does appear to get a bit to warm, a complete fluid change is in order and may need a fresh water pump, not leaking but it is my assumption from it getting a bit hot. could just need a coolant flush but figured i would list the worse case . trans shifts towards you and up into reverse fine, shift away from you and up into what feels like first gear and pulls out strong with no issues and shifts away from you and down to the next gear. seems to be 2 speed, not sure if it was customized but it moves it out quickly and smoothly with plenty of power. .brakes feel good and stop the car well, tires are older white walls and have no dead spots and hold air fine with no issues, i would say and good fluid change, fresh battery for the hell of it, a good carb cleaning and adjustment or just go ahead and do a carb rebuild , maybe a water pump and it would be a great driver, has options like the larger windshield visor, rear fender skirt and dual spot lights, all chrome and trim is in very nice condition. flying angel hood ornament is also in excellent condition. all glass is in nice shape. all in all, a great old 48 coupe, the coupes are getting harder to find in nice shape these days and have a high book value, NADA.com puts a 48 desoto deluxe coupe in average condition at over $12,000 and excellent condition at over $24,000. .i would put this one a bit above average. with new paint and couple hundred bucks , it would be close to the higher end book value. not expecting the bidding to go to book value so it is a "no reserve" auction. so please only bid if your serious about buying it.
