Vehicle description
DESCRIPTION 1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe This ‘40 Special Deluxe Coupe was restored to stock specifications by the previous owner. I bought it out of an Estate Auction 3 years ago for my father-in-law to use, so I don"t have all the restoration documentation, but I believe it to be all period correct. My father in-law (& my mother in-law) drove the car around his neighborhood for the last 3 years. Due to his health declining he can no longer enjoy the car, so it is time to let it go. Exterior
It is a beautiful original metal body and chrome trim. The exterior is in great condition and I would rate the paint at a solid 8.5 out of 10. It could be a 9+ with a little buffing and polishing. There are no significant scratches, nicks, dents bumps or bruises. It is a very nice bright paint finish on a very solid (no rust) body. It appears the car had all the fenders removed and restored at one time, painted and a complete frame-on restoration done to it. All the chrome is in great shape, but some chrome pieces do have some minor pitting. It is not concours quality, but will show very respectfully at most car shows. All the bumpers appear to have been replaced when the car was restored. The tires look like new, including the spare. The Chevrolet badged moon caps on all 4 wheels are in great shape. All the wheels have been restored to look like new. Interior
Tan mohair interior looks like new. It looks and feels like it was redone with new old stock materials when the car was restored by the previous owner. The carpeting looks like new. The headliner is tight and in perfect condition. The dash and interior of the doors were all repainted when the restoration was completed and look awesome. All the gauges work except clock. It does have an aftermarket radio that will need some attention. Not sure why it isn’t working (I just never use it). All the windows work as they should. One back window has some slight delaminating at bottom of glass, but all other windows look and work perfectly. Drivetrain
The factory prescribed 216ci inline 6-cylinder (rated at 90hp) is under the hood and in great condition. My mechanic recently serviced the car and said it appears the engine must have been completely rebuilt at the time of restoration. It looks and runs like a new engine. Always starts right up and purrs smooth. The 3 speed on the column transmission is vacuum assisted and shifts very easily and smooth. This car will run 70 miles an hour, but is more comfortable at 55mph. It does have some play in the steering wheel, but does not drift on the road and will run straight and smooth on the road at 55mph. Undercarriage
Framing and suspension, (independent coil springs upfront and leaf springs on the back), are all showing very light surface rust from sitting so long but are still rock solid. It is very structurally sound underneath with only very light surface rust and a few cobwebs from sitting. Drum brakes are all around with new brakes and wheel cylinders installed when restoration was done. No structural problems for this undercarriage. Drive-Ability
She fired right up with no smoking ever and runs smooth and powerful for the in-line 6 cylinder. It has good handling characteristics for having skinny bias belt tires and drum brakes. The clutch has a very slight chatter to it when you first take off. My mechanics says it needs to be driven and that slight chatter should go away. It does have some slight oil leakage. Again, my mechanic says that may seal up as the car is driven more. The car is in great condition mechanically and cosmetically. It is a beautiful car that just needs to be driven and enjoyed. It sits most of the time in my conditioned garage on a lift. It is a beautiful car, but remember it is 81 years old and isn"t concourse perfect. I just never drive it and it is time to let it go. Contact me for more details or pictures.
