Vehicle description
Up for auction is an early 1925 Model T Ford Coupe, whichwas built in November of 1924. This carhas been in my family now for 73 years. My Grandfather, (Fred Long) who was a charter member of the Nation’sCapital Region MTFCI, purchased this car sometime in 1948 while working hisbeat as a Washington DC policeman. Heoften saw the car being driven as daily transportation and one day he stoppedthe owner and made an offer on the car. He paid $50 for it. Sometime between 1948 and 1950, my grandfather restored thecar. Clearly the standards of the day weredifferent than now, but the car still wears its 70+ year old paint. The gray wool interior is a replacement thatmy grandmother sewed from scratch when it was restored. It has held up well and is far more ruggedthan the replacements today. It looksremarkably like the gray Ford cloth interior, but not exact. Since its purchase in 48, the coupe has had a prettyinteresting history with us. It was usedin the early 1950’s during opening day celebrations when the Chesapeake Baybridge was opened. It was also used inthe 1955 movie, “Court-martial of Billy Mitchell” starring Gary Cooper andElizabeth Montgomery. In 1972, the oldFord got submerged in 4 feet of water when Hurricane Agnes came up throughMaryland and the flood breached the dykes. The water line is faintly visible on the door panels. The car was quickly dried out, cleaned andback in service after the flood with no lingering damage other than the doorpanel stains. From 1950 until 1983, the car saw constant use touring thestates surrounding Washington DC with the AACA and other clubs. In 83 it was parked until I took possessionof it in 2003. Under my care, it hasn’tbeen driven more than 200 miles because as a two-seater, it was too small for afamily. I have a 1915 Touring car thatwe use. Plus, I’ve migrated toward Brasscars more than anything else, so the old Coupe just doesn’t get used much. It has been maintained and driven on occasionjust for exercise, but mostly it just sits. So it’s time to pass it along. About the car. The car still has its original drive-line that it had whenmy grandfather bought it in 48. It’s agood runner and will be great for touring. The engine has never been fully rebuilt on today’s standards and stillsports its standard bore and cast-iron pistons. It has had the head shaved, ringson a couple of occasions and several valves and two rods replaced in the 73years we’ve had it. It’s also had twovalve jobs that I know of whereby all eight seats were lapped. I also replaced the lifters with adjustable’srecently. The block has severalwater-jacket cracks that were there as far back as 48. They’ve been repaired with epoxy over theyears and never given us any problems. Iground them out and filled them with JB weld this year so they are good foranother 20 years. Not to worry, I dohave a spare 1925 block that goes with the car that can be put into service atthe new owner’s leisure. I also have theoriginal engine pans to go with the car. The one thing that does not work right now is the starter. But it starts easy by the hand-crank so Ihaven’t fussed with it. I also have a spare one of those to go alongwith the new owner too. The car has anew set of “old version” Scandinavia bands in it with zero miles. The oil was just changed too. About 7 years ago, I put a brand new set of tires and tubeson the car from Universal. They haveprobably 20 miles on them and are not cracking or checking that I can see. The differential has not been opened up thatI know of. But I’ve experienced noissues in my short excursions that would indicate the thrust washers are babbitor excessively worn. Nevertheless, it issomething to consider. I did put NOS Hyattbearing sleeves in it several years back and back before I got it, my uncle putspiral springs around the axles and neoprene seals in it to preventleaking. The body has all of its original sheet metal and the wood isoriginal too. I put a new top on it backin 2004, which kind of was a fail, but It looks great and does not leak. The paint is very old as I have said and twoof the wheels are peeling/flaking. Thepaint is somewhat dull, with lots of chips and scratches, but in one of thephoto’s I tried to capture an area of the hood that I waxed to show that it hassome shine left to it. From 10 feetaway, it looks great – just like a Model T should. It just needs some detailing. Along with the spare engine block, and some other miscellaneous engine parts, thecar comes with a replacement hood that my grandfather bought years ago becausethe original is cracking. As a bonus, you get a layer of river mud on the new/old hood, left behind from the flood in72. Overall, this is a great car that with a little bit oftinkering and maintenance, you can have it ready to tour. It is time for me to pass it along to someonewho will enjoy it and maybe even restore it. A very reasonable and LOW reserve has been added for this "entry level" Model T. TERMS: Deposit of $500 is required within 24 hours of your winningbid. The remainder is due when you pickIN CASH. I WILL NOT take any other formof payment. It has a clear Marylandtitle in my Uncle’s name and ownership will be transferred with this title anda bill of sale. I will not go to DMV andhave it re-titled. That place is azoo. Shipping arrangements are up toyou. Please note, that my driveway canonly handle a pickup truck and car trailer. If you are having a big car carrier come fetch it, I will need to knowso I can be in contact with the driver. Ilive on a mountain so you can’t get a semi up my driveway. If youhave any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I communicate quickly and clearly.
